In only its third year, the Best of Anime 2012 is shaping up to be one of the biggest events on the Manila convention circuit! Featuring cosplay competitions, Japanese culture workshops, and performances by Japanese visual kei band Uchuu Sentai Noiz ( Noiz) — this promises to be one of the best BOA events ever!
The Best of Anime 2012 is a co-located event of the Manila International Book Fair; BOA ran from the 15th to the 16th of September 2012 at the SMX Convention Center. The convention had a wide variety of booths — ranging from merchants and dealers to school organizations to offline versions of blogs and websites including one from magnetic-rose.net!).
What’s an anime convention without cosplay?! Well, BOA 2012 has two great competitions lined up for anime and cosplay fans. Saturday featured the All-star Cosplay Competition — which welcomed entries not just from anime but comic books, video games, toy lines, and movies as well. The judges had their work cut out for them (I should know, I was one of them ^^;;) as over fifty competitors took to the stage.
The proverbial bacon was taken home by three very talented cosplayers: Grand Prize Winner Bolen Lareza as MG Sinanju; 1st Runner-up Guy Singzon as Master Yi; and 2nd-Runner-up Rb Cheng as Red Fury Genobreaker.
Last but not least, was the one of the highlights of the weekend event: the first of Uchuu Sentai NOIZ’s two mini concerts! With some fans flying in from as far away as Cebu, Davao, and Tokyo (yes — that Tokyo!), it was the closest that many local fans could get to a genuine J-rock concert. The band featured tracks from their best-of album Great Rock ‘N’ Roll Heroes. The energy in the pit was AMAZING — there’s nothing quite like this, even in the giant arena gigs we’ve attended in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Singapore!
