‘Sandman: Overture’ Issue #1 Cover and Potential ‘Sandman’ Movie Rumors

SANDMAN-OVERTURE-MCKEAN

Good news for fans of Neil Gaiman - The Sandman is back in the news. In addition to the coming of a new comic, The Sandman: Overture (the cover of which you can see above), it looks like there may be a little pull from DC to get Warner Bros. working on a movie adaptation of the original Sandman series. Check the rumormill highlights out below.

Apparently, DC President Diane Nelson, in a recent interview, said that one of the top DC titles on her list of "make these into movies" is Gaiman's The Sandman. It may seem like nothing that the prez of DC said that she wants to see Gaiman's work turned into a big screen flick, but she also happens to be the one at DC with the biggest pull when it comes to pushing Warner Bros. towards new projects.

Given that Warner Bros. already has enough on their plate with the Man of Steel success and their subsequent race to start competing seriously in the super hero movie wars, it could be some time before they get around to it, even if it is on their list. And we certainly don't want a repeat of the first attempt at a Sandman movie, in which the movie execs tried to alter the story by having Morpheus summoned into the world via a group of teenagers doing a ritual at a party. With the popularity of the comic and the rabid nature of fans these days, there would likely be a riot.

Those that want to check out The Sandman: Overture can expect to see it hitting shelves this fall. As for the movie... well, we'll just have to wait and see what happens. MaybeDC has something to say about it at SDCC this year? Make sure to check in with Nerd Bastards to see whatever it is that DC has to say over the weekend, Sandman related or not.

Thanks to BleedingCool and io9 for the heads-up.

Pull List: Comics Coming Out 11/21/12

What will we have to be thankful for in the comics department today? Quite a lot, actually.

  • DC has the 52 Omnibus and a collection of Batman/Judge Dredd crossovers, which are actually pretty hard to find, so this hardcover is quite welcome.
  • Marvel launches Indestructible Hulk and Captain America, as well as wrapping up the surprisingly entertaining crossover Minimum Carnage. It’s a good day to be a Mark Waid or a Rick Remender fan.
  • Image launches Clone, about a man who discovers he is one and that all of his fellow clones are after his pregnant wife, and the miniseries Comeback, which is basically Freejack in reverse; people pulled out of time at the last second to save them. There’s also more Revival and a new Walking Dead trade.
  • Dark Horse has a new Baltimore one-shot and launches Number 13, a story about an amnesiac child with lasers, with a zero issue.
  • IDW wraps up their latest Rocketeer miniseries, and launches the mini Adventures of Augusta Wind, an all-ages fantasy by J.M DeMatteis that reads a lot like “Alice on Infinite Earths”, launches their new Judge Dredd ongoing, and finally has a second issue of Frankenstein: Alive, Alive!
  • And Boom! has more Bravest Warriors and launches Supurbia as an ongoing.

As always, the full list is under the cut: Let us know what you’re picking up, and let’s talk some comics.

Nerd Art Dump: Monster Fighting Robots, Mother of Dragons, Zombie Cats, & MOAR!

tumblr_mp9nujWspT1r1jfkxo1_1280

Each and every week we scour the Internet for nothing but the best in nerdy art. We leave no digital stone unturned, we poke and prod every nook and cranny of the Interwebz. Why? Because we love you, and we love to bring you weekly feed of nerd art.

On with the dump!

Above: Berkay Daglar didn't have to do much to get us excited about this Pacific Rim poster, we were taken the moment we saw the giant robot. It just helps they made a sweet poster that I personally wouldn't mind having hung in my living room right about now. [Berkay Daglar]

Hit the jump for Disney girls, ninja turtles and more.

We've been waiting for a proper reboot of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Otto Schmidt may have just kickstarted everything. Removing all the slapstick and the steroids of the 80s' series and giving everyone a more modernized tone, Otto has made a He-man series worth watching. And honestly, I missed Orko the first time I saw this, see how fast you can find him. [Geek Tyrant]

wonder_sketch_by_jimbobox-d5ngmks

Yes, Wonder Woman is lovely to stare at, but watch out for that rope of her's or "mercy" won't be the only thing you're saying between her punches. This quick sketch, that's right sketch, by JimboBox is perfect. [Deviant Art]

tumblr_mpa6lwgFyl1rjm60do2_1280

We featured the touching work of Andry Rajoelina and his comic book families before with DC, but now he's at it again with the heroes of Marvel. And no, we're not crying, we're just upset there's no more tickets to Comic-Con. Why must you make us feel, Andry? [Herochan]

tumblr_mmntceQ4ju1qakadqo1_500

The first family of Marvel and the Fantastic Four get their own retro poster thanks to Colby H Bryant. It makes you just want to get into the Fantastic car and get to punching Doctor Doom in his silly metal face. [Herochan]

adventure-time-lich

The Lich in Adventure Time is mean, scary and a downright evil dude, but thankfully he's just a cartoon character. That was until artist Sam Denmark put his digital pen to work and created a version of the villain that would give Freddy Krueger nightmares. Remember, he can't hurt you if you have a sweater imbued with the power of "liking someone a lot" - we hope. [Obvious Winner]

e958db92a746b2bdbe3f118060f31d2c-d6biwdt

This season of Game of Thrones may be over, but the stellar artwork continues to go on. Daenerys and her currently calm fire-breathing dragon are at a moment of peace thanks to artist zimmay and their crafty hand. Season 4, here we come. [Deviant Art]

gotham_city_sirens_by_wscottforbes-d6bjhc5

Poison Ivy, Catwoman and Harley Quinn, alone they're pretty dang clever, but put them together and these sirens are bringing Gotham to its knees. W. Scott Forbes

Lerms-Man-of-Steel

People love Man of Steel, it revived the Superman franchise and made Henry Cavill a household name. So why not let Lerms take a crack at giving him a portrait worthy of the great hall in the Fortress of Solitude. Lois will love it and you should too. [Geek-Art]

zombiecats57747

Every once in a while we just have to post a drawing that makes us say, "what kind of gold is this?" Today this gold comes in the form of Minna Sundberg's cat-filled zombie apocalypse scenario, with the cats trying to survive their undead former friends. Nice to see that one cat has their eye on the ball in all of this. [Geek Tyrant]

REVIEW: ‘Arrow’ – Episode 2 – “Honor Thy Father”

After its promising premiere I’m happy to say Arrow continues to deliver action and drama with a hint of superhero camp. Stephen Amell‘s exposition-heavy voice over kicks off the episode and makes it clear this is a storytelling tool they’re sticking with, whether we like it or not. And honestly, it stops grating on you after a little while, especially because I’m not sure what other way they would get across the inner workings of Ollie’s mind. The struggle within himself over whether he can fulfill his promise to his father and be the son everyone expects him to be is at the heart of this episode.

Continuing to hunt down the men in his father’s book, Arrow’s target this episode is a billionaire, Martin Summers, who’s operating a drug trade with the suspicious Chinese Triad. He’s also the target of Laurel (Katie Cassidy) who’s trying to bring Summers in on charges for murdering a young women’s father. We get one courtroom scene for Laurel to strut her stuff and it’s just not doing anything for me. Maybe I’m jaded by the millions other courtroom dramas on television but I really don’t give a shit about any lawyer-thing Laurel does. Hopefully over the season they’ll develop her thirst for justice because right now it feels like she’s a lawyer only because it allows her to come up against both her father, Detective Lance (Paul Blackthorne) and Arrow on a regular basis.

With Laurel pressuring Summers she becomes the target of the Triad’s assassin, China White (Kelly Hu). Her appearance in this episode is brief, but what she brings is badass. White’s an accomplished martial artist and can easily handle anything either Ollie’s bodyguard, David Ramsey putting in a surprisingly sympathetic performance as Diggle, or Ollie himself can throw her way. Even wearing a ridiculously platinum wig, she’s fierce. White’s not defeated come the end of the episode, and I expect and am looking forward to more of her in the future.

What “Honor Thy Father” is looking to hammer home is the personal sacrifice Ollie will need to endure in order to see his mission through. Amell continues to deliver a strong performance and does quite well at bringing the many facets of Ollie to screen. In the few flashbacks this episode we see his heartbreaking struggle to bury his father on the island and it’s a really touching moment reminding us his struggle on the island was as much emotional as physical.

Amell’s physicality continues to shine and he can be quite imposing as Arrow. We’re gifted a few more gratuitous training shots that I don’t believe anyone will complain about. And Arrow has some fun interrogation techniques creatively involving his skills and easily getting the desired results. I’m seeing more and more of the archer we’re familiar with in this episode.

At home Ollie is drifting away from his family, pushing them away, and this doesn’t go unnoticed. Cue another heartfelt scene between him and his sister, Thea (Willa Holland). Have I mentioned I want her so badly to actually become a vigilante herself? She’s proving she could be a real asset to Ollie, even is she isn’t slinging arrows alongside him, and I look forward to seeing their relationship grow. In public Ollie continues playing up the partying billionaire and, seemingly, continues to be a disgrace to his father’s memory. In fact he’s doing such a good job his mother, Moira (Susanna Thompson), who’s clearly far more involved in her husband’s death than we thought, believes he knows nothing of what’s really going on.

Arrow is shaping into a show with exciting action and an intriguing mystery around Ollie’s time on the island plus his mother’s shady dealings. I wouldn’t expect any of the cast or writers to be hit up with Emmy nods next year, but things are plugging along nicely. It’s filled a gap in superhero media and has become a welcome addition to my weekly TV schedule. Have you been enjoying Arrow? Interview: Matt Kindt on ‘MIND MGMT’, Those ‘Green Lantern’ Rumors, and More

Matt Kindt is the creator of Mind MGMT, a mind bending monthly comic book from Dark Horse. Here, we talk to Kindt about his role on Ridley Scott‘s recently announced adaptation, having a set end for his opus, whether he’ll tie up loose ends, what is and isn’t real, the rumors that he might take the baton from Geoff Johns on DC’s Green Lantern book, and more.

Matt Kindt gets into your head after the jump.

What’s the latest news on the 3 Story adaptation, how much input have you had on that project and how much do you plan on having with Ridley Scott’s planned adaptation of MIND MGMT?

Matt Kindt: 3 Story: The Secret History of the Giant Man is going forward — we’ve got a couple of actors ready to go and a new script nearly finished, so it’s getting there. I can’t really talk about it until everything is signed and “for-sure, for-sure,” but I’m excited.

As far as the MIND MGMT adaptation — I’m the official “consultant” so I’m giving them everything I’ve got — the entire three years worth of MIND MGMT, so they’re the only other humans that know what happens all the way through. So with that info, I’m willing to help, but only as far as they want my advice.

The comic is my number one priority and area of expertise. So I’m more than content to let them take it and make something as-good or better than the comic. Blade Runner is one of the few examples of a movie being as good or better than the source material, but it’s better in a totally different way — so I’m hoping they can capture that same magic with MIND MGMT.

Matt Kindt 1

There’s been some speculation that you might be a potential for the Green Lantern gig and presently, you’re writing the Martian Manhunter backup story in the pages of JLA. You recently told CBR that your style doesn’t fit the “house style” over at DC. If they were to offer you a Martian Manhunter solo book or Green Lantern as a writer only, would you be able to fit it in with your other work and would it be as fulfilling for you as your creator owned stuff where you have complete control of both the look and direction of your work?

Kindt: I’m not doing Green Lantern — I’ve seen that rumor circulating but unfortunately, it’s not me. Someone else really great is getting it though so I think everyone will be happy. That said, I’d love to do it. There isn’t a character in the DCU that I wouldn’t love to write — the whole universe is so great. I was writing Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. monthly along with MIND MGMT, so writing definitely fits into my schedule. It’s just a matter of waiting for the right project to open up.

I’m writing a yet-to-be-announced limited series for Marvel right now that’s going to be super-cool. So yeah — the more writing they give me the more fun I can have. The Marvel/DC work-for-hire stuff is really like the dessert for me after a main course of my creator owned MIND MGMT. I love doing them both but I wouldn’t be as happy just doing one or the other. I want it all!

Do you have an ending picked out for MIND MGMT and if so, has it evolved as you’ve been making the book, or has it remained set in stone?

Kindt: I have the entire thing mapped out and paced to end at issue 36 (issue 37 if you count the 0 issue) — there’s no way I could start something this big and epic without knowing exactly where it’s going. I definitely leave some wiggle room in there to create and change some things along the way — I can’t help but come up with new and more ideas as I go but generally, everyone and everything will have a place to be at the end…

Matt Kindt 2

When it comes to an end, will you feel a responsibility to tie up every loose end, or are you comfortable leaving certain things out in the open and open to interpretation?

Kindt: Yes — I promise you that every loose end will be tied up. I actually have a document with every loose end typed out as a kind of checklist so I can keep track of everything and make sure I check it all off the list. That sounds like a joke — but I’m not kidding! I go back through and read the issues before I start every new arc and answer what I can and figure out how and where the answers will be. It’s an imperfect science but I hate loose ends. If there ends up being any, it’ll be on purpose because I wanted to leave something to the imagination.

Would readers be wise to take everything they have seen in the book, so far, with a grain of salt in terms of what is and what isn’t genuine and can deep science fiction exist without paranoia on the page and in the reader?

Kindt: That seems like a leading question, but at the risk of killing some paranoia, everything that’s happening in the series is really happening. Mostly. Ha! What I mean is that there is nothing in there that will end up being a dream that a character wakes up from. I think that’s such a lame literary device.

I’ve actually gotten that question a lot from fans — and I always answer with that answer and have always gotten the same “thank god!” response. I think the dialogue/captions in the first few pages of issue one sort talked about dreams and how you can surprise yourself in a dream — which is a red herring really. If anything that dialogue is about how your brain, in real life, can play those weird tricks on you. I just think it’s crazy. That’s all it was, I promise!

The capability of the mass media and advertising as a tool of manipulation features prominently in the book. What inspired that?

Kindt: That’s been a theme that has interested me since I can remember really. A lot of my projects and paintings in art school were always advertising and pop-cultre based. Sort of poking fun at the nature of mass media and marketing. It’s evolved as I’ve gotten older but what still amazes me and creeps me out is hearing my daughter sing a jingle from a TV or radio commercial out of the blue. It’s horrible in a way, but also funny how your brain and marketing work. I can still sing Coke jingles from 1980 word for word. Those are songs and words that are just burned into my consciousness forever, for better or worse.

What inspired the Mind Management organization itself?

Kindt: A term that was in a friend of mine’s novel. He wrote this crazy long epic super spy novel and in it, the spies all took a bunch of spy courses and one of them was called “mind management.” I was reading this and laughing at it, and then it just got stuck in my head. I love those two words together. It just sounds so great and evocative. So I asked my friend if I could have that. And he didn’t know what I was talking about — he’d forgotten he even wrote it! It was one throw-away line in his million word novel… now it’s taking up the next three years of my life!

There is an entire wing of the internet dedicated to the pursuit of spoilers. Would this be more fun for you if people weren’t so obsessed with finding out where a story is going before it’s had a chance to get there?

Kindt: No way. Guessing is half the fun. And if a story can’t hold up to being spoiled, then it’s not a good story anyway. It’s the journey, not the spoiled destination that matters. I like a good surprise though — so if I leave my 3-ring-binder of MIND MGMT secrets in a coffee shop somewhere, please return it without reading it! No one has really guessed anything yet though. Honestly, I’m trying to keep it so crazy that it’ll be impossible to guess. You don’t even know what you don’t know yet!

What are you hoping to see the show explore as the season progresses?

Nerd Art Dump: Burlesque Princess Leia, The Dixon Brothers, Sword Swinging Link & MOAR!

Each and every week we scour the Internet for nothing but the best in nerdy art. We leave no digital stone unturned, we poke and prod every nook and cranny of the Interwebz. Why? Because we love you, and we love to bring you weekly feed of nerd art. On with the dump!

Above: This burlesque style Princess Leia by Deviant Artist jazreet911 has all the right curves for all you scruffy nerf herders out there who shoot first. Just don’t bring up Alderaan, it’s kills the mood. [Geek Tyrant]

Hit the jump for video game characters as dogs, Naughty Snow White and moar.

Twenty famous video game characters, every one of them transformed by Jeff Delgado into some type of dog. See if you can figure out all the characters/breeds. Unless you have something better to do. [Game Freaks]

A play on Salvador Dal ‘s The Persistence of Memory, artist Feralucce decided to inject a little Doctor Who into some modern art. [Deviant Art]

It might be a fictional magazine cover, but the ladies of Gotham city certainly have something catching their attention. Part of a series of covers by Mark Dos Santos, Norman Rockwell inspired covers featuring Batgirl and Robin, the Joker and a rogues Christmas dinner. Right in time for the holiday season, you can own one of these prints too. [The Mary Sue]

Merle and Daryl, together again. Julie9rides rendered this awesome pic of the estranged brothers from AMC’s The Walking Dead. We now return you to waiting till February for the second half of season three. [Alexlovee]

In Hollywood films a keyframe illustration is usually the starting or stopping point of a films transition into a new scene and none have been better then Andy Park‘s work for The Avengers. Highlighting several of the film’s more notable scenes as well as character designs, Park does some insanely detailed work. You can almost feel Joss Whedon in the background going “I’m going to be so rich”. [Geek Tyrant]

Never let Zatanna ask if the cat’s got your tongue, you might end up like the Catwoman here, thanks to Elizabeth Torque. [Nudity and Nerdery]

Man, the Muppets really tried some different kinds of music before giving up and going back to feature films. Too bad Jordan Kotzebue didn’t realize the Gorillaz already had the animated band locked for the last decade, they might have had it if Damon Albarn hadn’t already jammed his foot in the door. [Comics Alliance]

Something tells me Virginie Siveton has had Snow White in her cross hairs for a Rockabilly Pinup for quite some time, she’s already done a series of these with other Disney princesses. Queen Grimhilde was jealous that she was the fairest in the land, she was jealous that Snow White had better tattoos. [Deviant Art]

If we learned anything from Wreck-It Ralph it’s that letting a different game character in a game there not supposed to be in is always a bad move. Dave Pryor has given us a perfect example of this, with Link going sword crazy hacking and slashing ghosts while Pacman takes an arrow to the…I think it’s his knee. [XombieDIRGE]

DC Gets To The Point, Puts Jeff Lemire On ‘Green Arrow’

Jeff Lemire and Scott Snyder are pretty much DC’s MVP writers at this point. Lemire handles Animal Man and Frankenstein: Agents Of S.H.A.D.E., took over Justice League Dark with issue #9, and also writes Sweet Tooth for Vertigo.

Now, DC is showing their appreciation by putting him on Green Arrow.

Green Arrow has had something of a rough time at the New 52. J.T. Krul’s opening arc was… a rocky start, to say the least, and Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens were brought in to salvage the book before Ann Nocenti took over. If that litany of names sounds familiar, it’s because that’s pretty much everybody DC brings in when a book is going off the rails and needs to be fixed.

Still, Green Arrow has been rising in cultural prominence, partially because he’s the closest thing DC has to Batman who isn’t Batman. He’s going to be in Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Arrow has been the CW’s biggest hit and more importantly retained most of its audience.

February is when GA officially joins the Justice League in the New 52. Taking over the art will be Andrea Sorrentino, whose cover you can see up above.

Lemire has been taking questions over Twitter and mostly offering teasing answers. But there is one definitive answer we have, regarding face fuzz:

The most common tweet I’ve gotten I the request for the return of the goatee. Going to suck to disappoint everyone. #dccomicsnogoateepolicy

What are you hoping to see the show explore as the season progresses?

Arrow airs on the CW, Wednesday nights at 8pm.
