These Fairytale Princesses Are Looking At a Dystopian Life [Cosplay]

snowwhite

When you're a kid, fairy-tale princesses are ever young, beautiful, adventurous and positive. You want to be them when you grow up and you pretend to be them.

Unless you're Dina Goldstein who started pondering what might happen to those same princesses if they grew up in our world. Then you get a series like Fallen Princesses.

Snow White's an overwhelmed stay at home mom, Cinderella's still waiting for her prince, Rapunzel..well, that'll break your heart. Ariel's fate made me want to cry.

Look, I'll be honest. They're beautiful pictures and it's a really intriguing idea. But it makes me think the kids have the right of it.

Check out the rest of the pictures after the break. Just nab a few tissues.

‘Maleficent’ Footage Teased at D23; New Synopsis Revealed

maleficent___teaser_poster_by_graphuss-d59mqn1

With Disney's D23 expo somehow avoiding any significant Star Wars wars news, people have found other things to get excited for. With so many projects announced, fans have been crowding around Maleficent - the film centered around Sleeping Beauty's villain. Releasing first ever footage from the movie, the expo has released a few new details, many of which we have for you.

Putting a spin on the classic Disney tale, viewers will be treated to Maleficent, played by Angelina Jolie, as a teenage fairy. Odds a younger actress will take over the teenage role, but as it goes on will feature Jolie at intersecting points to the Disney animation; including the battle between the prince and the dragon.

The clip released at the expo is just one of those intersecting points, the christening of Princess Aurora, played by Elle Fanning as a younger Princess. While we can't show you the footage, since it hasn't been leaked yet, we can however give you the cliff notes revealing the castle and the fairies, played by Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, and Lesley Manville, granting baby Aurora wishes until things get dark and stormy.

Everything begins to shake, Maleficent's horns appear, and then her shadow as she sweeps into the room in a giant gown. "Well well," she laughs. "I must say I felt quite distressed not receiving an invitation. What an awkward situation." King Stefan, played by Sharlto Copley, declares "You're not welcome here," but the command falls on deaf ears as green energy and smoke surround Maleficent as she casts her curse. Intercut with this scene is footage of an older Aurora running around happily, ending the clip with the audience's knowledge of what's to come.

It sound's like a great way to kick off promoting a movie, and according to Slash Film's Peter Sciretta, is a "really look[ing] like a Disney fairy tale come to life."

Maleficent arrives July 2, 2014. Check out the newer, updated synopsis below:

"Maleficent" is the untold story of Disney's most iconic villain from the 1959 classic "Sleeping Beauty." A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal-an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king's successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom-and perhaps to Maleficent's true happiness as well.

Is Disney Hiding ‘Star Wars’? Why That Might Not be a Bad Thing

Star-Disney

The last few months of 2012 yielded a double whammy announcement that blew the collective minds of nerds the world over, and made the Internet crap its digital pants:

Disney has purchased Lucasfilm for $4.1 billion... AND Star Wars: Episode VII has begun pre-production, and is due for release in May of 2015.

For the next several months, websites like ours had little else on their minds but Disney, Star Wars, and everything their union implies. First bit of info released was the identity of the Episode VII screenwriter: Little Miss Sunshine scribe Michael Arndt. I can't tell you how many news reports I alone wrote on the subject of Episode VII rumors and suppositions-and by the time I joined Nerd Bastards, the news was already three months old!

I WAS, however, on board for the next world-shattering revelation from the House of Mouse: J.J. Abrams, best known as the creator of Lost and director of the 2009 Star Trek reboot, had been tapped by Disney to helm Episode VII.

Another few months of general online madness followed: A bit of a virtual fracas broke out between those who approved of Abrams as director, and those who thought it was the worst idea they'd ever heard. More news reports, and even a Top 10 list tangentially related to the subject were composed by yours truly as well.

That was late January when Disney confirmed Abrams as director... and Mickey has barely let out a squeak about the project since. For the past 6-7 months we've heard little but unsubstantiated casting rumors, and vague notions of Star Wars "side projects". Standalone films about everyone from Boba Fett to Yoda, and possibly a live-action TV series. And yes, John Williams will return to score the new trilogy, but was that ever in doubt?

That's all peachy keen and all... But what's the skinny on Ep 7? Remember that, Disney? The single most anticipated movie in... well, probably EVER?

2702193-disney_star_wars_logo

Disney COULD have thrown SW fans a bone either at SDCC 2013, or their own recent "fanstravaganza", D23... But no dice.

What goes on?

Well, I suppose we should start with good old Occam's Razor: There's been no news because there IS no news. Nothing noteworthy has yet happened in the film making process. Nothing definite as far as casting goes, no plot details are ready to be publicized, not even a title has been settled on. It's possible that this is all we're dealing with.

But then, we have to remember that this is a J.J. Abrams film... this is a director not only notoriously secretive about his projects, but willing tell bald-faced LIES about the films he's working on in order to keep plot elements secret (Thanks for making me look like an asshole on Tumblr, J.J.-I took you at your word when you promised the villain of Into Darkness would NOT be Khan!).

In all honesty, the most likely explanation is probably that Star Wars is one of the VERY few cinematic properties that needs little or no "selling" to the public. The audience is built-in. If it opened tomorrow, with no further information revealed about its plot or characters, it would STILL break box-office records, and we all know this. Look at the prequel trilogy. As much as we as nerds pan these films, fact is, Revenge Of The Sith earned $380 million in the States alone... and this was AFTER the crushing disappointment of the first two installments.

Disney isn't saying anything because Disney doesn't NEED to say anything.

And that's probably the best way to go. It decreases the chance of over hyping the films, only to let the fans down when they learn the steak doesn't match the sizzle...

And if the films really ARE great-keeping relatively quiet about them will only increase the impact they'll have once they're released (Disney's not going to stay ABSOLUTELY quiet from now until 2015-that would be bad for business).

In the end, I think Disney will speak up about the new Star Wars films when they're damn good and ready.

Special thanks to Cinema Blend.

Disney Princesses Give Leia a Warm And Musical Welcome [Video]

One of the questions I’ve seen brought up the most since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm is this: is Leia now a Disney princess?

I say definitely not, but it doesn’t make videos like this one any less funny. Last time we saw this group of princesses they donned glasses and encouraged the hipster movement, but this time they’re welcoming Leia to the club. They tell her the ropes about what’s needed to be a Disney princess: proper diet, singing, and not showing tears.

Please remember to take it with a heavy dose of sarcasm, or it will make you angry (it did that to me at first).

Yoda Not Enough? Two More Stand Alone ‘Star Wars’ Films Planned for Young Han Solo and Boba Fett

boba-fett-han-solo-star-wars

The news about these spin-off, stand alone films based in the Star Wars universe but not necessarily related to the continuation of the saga has been coming in at dizzying speeds. First there was the pretty solid rumor we’d soon see a Yoda stand alone flick, then came the confirmation from Disney‘s Bob Iger they were indeed planning spin-off features. Today, Entertainment Weekly broke the news we can expect two more characters to get the stand alone film treatment: Han Solo and Boba Fett.

And I believe what you just heard was a collective, explosive, fangasm.

Can you believe it!? Han Solo. Boba Fett. Starring in their very own movies! Seriously, this isn’t a dream is it? Or some really convincing fanfiction?

EW explains the two proposed projects as, “A young Han Solo saga, focusing on the wisecracking smuggler's origin story, and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett at the center of a rogue's gallery of galactic scum.” It’s… it’s… all we could ever ask for!

Both projects are still in the super, duper early development stage so any details here could change without notice. The Han Solo picture is said to take place between Episodes III and IV, while the Boba Fett one either between Episodes IV and V, or V and VI. Placing these films within the time frame of the original trilogy allows other major characters, like Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt, to also make appearances. And were these films to happen I think we can all agree an appearance from one, if not both, is almost guaranteed.

When confirming these spin-off features as the real deal, Iger mentioned Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan were each working on one of them, but now we wonder, which ones? A Solo or Fett film from either would simply be the best thing ever. Who would you choose for which? And come to think of it, the more pressing question here is who to cast as a young Han Solo!? Would Harrison Ford make an appearance? Maybe in a sort of framing sequence, like EW suggests? What about Fett? Would they seek new talent or tap Temuera Morrison again? Who directs these flicks? Gah! So many questions!

Okay, be honest, is this the best news you’ve heard today, or best news you’ll hear ever? I mean, Han Solo AND a Boba Fett movies!! Be still my fangirl heart!

Samuel L. Jackson Wants To Talk Star Wars VII

Samuel L. Jackson, (Mr. Jackson if you’re nasty), is throwing his hat into the Star Wars VII ring. He recently talked with E! News about his desire to remain associated with the franchise he loves.

“I’m not surprised but totally geeked by the idea of there being more Star Wars. It’s like, okay, Obi-Wan was dead when episode four started, so maybe everyone thinks I’m dead and we’ll find out what happened to Mace Windu. I can come back as one-armed or a one-handed Jedi that’s still around that didn’t actually die.”

“I could do that or be a ghost hologram. I don’t care, I just want to stay associated with the franchise.”

“I just always loved it. I always loved the idea of it, that there’s this whole civilization out there somewhere else that’s just as much fun and different and diverse and wild as we are.”

What do you think? We never really saw the body so there’s plenty of wiggle room to bring Mace Windu back. We saw Anakin fall through the speeder filled sky of Coruscant, so it’s not a stretch to see a Jedi Master like Mace Windu save himself as easily.

Star Wars VII is scheduled for release in 2015.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Director James Gunn Apologizes for Offensive Blog Post

In a move I’m sure everyone at Disney and Marvel are hoping will quell the lynch mob gunning for Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, the director has issued an apology through GLAAD. Earlier this week the internet erupted in outrage over misogynistic and homophobic comments Gunn made on his blog almost two years ago that offended many, myself included, and alarmed all. If you’re not aware of the details I suggest you check out our own Jason Tabrys’ fair and balanced (Can I even use that phrase? Has it already been corrupted and copyrighted?) take on the whole ordeal.

Gunn’s statement can be read, in full, below,

A couple of years ago I wrote a blog that was meant to be satirical and funny. In rereading it over the past day I don't think it's funny. The attempted humor in the blog does not represent my actual feelings. However, I can see where statements were poorly worded and offensive to many. I'm sorry and regret making them at all.

People who are familiar with me as evidenced by my Facebook page and other mediums know that I'm an outspoken proponent for the rights of the gay and lesbian community, women and anyone who feels disenfranchised, and it kills me that some other outsider like myself, despite his or her gender or sexuality, might feel hurt or attacked by something I said. We're all in the same camp, and I want to do my best to make this world a better place for all of us. I'm learning all the time. I promise to be more careful with my words in the future. And I will do my best to be funnier as well. Much love to all.

While I wasn’t going to sign a petition to get him kicked off Guardians, I felt confidant Disney would see to this situation. You know this apology happened because some executive in a suit pointed at Gunn and said, “You. Fix this.” But at the same time, I like to be optimistic and think the best of people and I do believe this is a heartfelt apology. This whole debacle only goes to prove you need to be careful with what write on the internet, or publish publicly anywhere. You’ll be held accountable one day and what you thought were harmless, funny jokes turn out be remarks you didn’t consider could be offensive to others. Stop and think, people.

At the same time, these comments Gunn made do reveal an ugliness maybe even Gunn himself didn’t suspect he had. And I can only hope that by the public’s refusal to laugh off these situations and ignore them, we all become more aware of the hateful things that can be said when you’re trying to be a comedian.

‘Wreck-It Ralph’ Producer Clark Spencer Spills The Beans On Skrillex Cameo

Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph is quickly becoming the animated movie to see this November. With stars like John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, and Sarah Silverman voicing the characters, this movie is sure to please kids, their parents, and gaming fanatics like myself. The attention to detail shown so far in the trailer and clips has been incredible.Producer Clark Spencer sat down with Sam Ashurst of Total Film to talk about the project how the project was able to get the rights to use all of our favorite video game characters that belonged to a myriad of competing video gaming companies.

“It was interesting part of the process, we talked early on about making the film authentic and the only way to do that was to have real game characters in the film as well as the characters we’d created, otherwise it would fell like an artificial environment.

But when you do that, you don’t know the reality of what characters you’re going to be able to license for the film.

Rich [Moore, director] and I went to E3, and pitched the movie to all the different game companies, talking about the concept.

What was great about that was we developed a one-on-one relationship [with the people at the game companies], and people warmed to the idea.

So they felt like it could be something interesting, but they were still a little skeptical, as they were giving their own creative characters over to Wreck-It Ralph.

And so we said we’d keep them involved in the process, and give them the script pages. We showed them the models, we showed them the early animation tests, and even the final animations.

We brought them along the entire way, and it made companies willing to participate, because they felt like we were going to be true to their characters.

As a result we got pretty much almost anything we wanted, because the companies started feeling the momentum and everybody pretty much said yes to us.”

Getting all those video game companies to agree is an amazing feat in itself, it must have looked like an almost impossible task in the beginning. I’m sure once one company agreed that the others most likely went with it so that their video game characters weren’t excluded from what could be a huge Disney movie blockbuster.

Spencer then went into detail about how specific those video game companies were about the use and appearance of their characters and how the production and animation team worked to include everyone in just about every step of the production.

“The games companies were very specific – there’s a scene in which Bowser drinks a cup of coffee, and they were very specific about how Bowser would drink coffee.

The other thing that was fascinating to me was that all of the companies know how tall their characters are.

There was lots of conversation about which character would be the biggest character in that Bad Anon scene. Even to the specifics of centimeters, but that was helpful, because we wanted it to be authentic.

We had a scene where we wanted the rings to come out of Sonic, and SEGA said the only way that happens is if he falls over, and we didn’t have him fall over in the scene, so we actually went back and re-animated it.”

There will be one HUGE video game character that won’t be making an appearance in Wreck-It Ralph, Mario will be curiously absent. Spencer addressed that issue by saying:

“The hard thing was, we were trying to work out the right way to use a character like Mario. It had to be organic to the film, we didn’t want to just paste him in there.

For Bowser, it made perfect sense for him to be a member of the Bad Anon group. For Mario himself we couldn’t think of the right way to incorporate him into the film, and so we didn’t do it.

Now we get to the human cameo in the film, Skrillex. It was announced at Comic Con that Skrillex would be contributing to the soundtrack for Wreck-T Ralph, but know we also know that Skrillex will be making his animated movie debut as well. When asked about this particular detail Spender said:

“We asked him if we could do it,” Spencer said. “We went to him first and said, ‘Hey, we have this party scene in the world of Fix It Felix Jr, and we have a DJ and we think it would make a nice cameo if we put you into it.’ And he was ecstatic.

We built his model, we put on his look, and we sent it to him to have him give us comments. And he said he would never wear non-black tennis shoes. He said “My tennis shoes will always be black.” So we changed the tennis shoes to black.

You don’t see them in the film, as he’s behind the DJ booth, but they were in the model. He has seen the animation, and he’s very, very excited about it.”

Who wouldn’t want to be in a Disney animated movie? This movie just keeps sounding better and better. The latest trailer is below, check it out.
