‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Has Huge Midnight Showing, Drops Two More Clips

Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is in theaters today, and it already grossed $25.25 million in U.S. theaters last night (the fifth-largest midnight showing). The midnight showings out-earned The Avengers ($18.7M) and Iron Man 3 ($15.6M), but The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is still tracking to earn around $172M for the weekend.

While it's still timely, we're posting the last two Hunger Games clips released by Lionsgate. The first shows wisdom dropper Jennifer Lawrence in the training room, shooting arrows at holographic cubes.

She hates these cubes!

We also get to see the fighting style of other tributes played by Jena Malone, Alan Ritchson, Meta Golding, Bruno Gunn, and Sam Claflin. The second clip shows Elizabeth Banks giving a pep talk before an important party. Meh. Less of that, more cage matches.

A Compendium Of Cool Comics Cosplay: November 22nd

Once again it's time for our Friday comics cosplay feature, casting the spotlight on the best comics related costumery from the cosplay community. As always, we're focusing on those cosplayers who we think deserve special recognition for their hard work creating the best costumes, whatever their budget, and also the work of those photographers who capture them for posterity.

This week we're featuring some awesome cosplay of Wonder Woman, Phoenix, Cyclops, Spawn, Black Widow, Rockabilly DC, Thundra, Magneto, Witchblade, Deadpool and Taskmaster!

Gamma Squad is committed to giving a voice to the cosplay community that thrives in communities like our friends at TheSuperheroCostumingForum.com. Each week we aim to spotlight our favorite costumes and, in addition, we also host a regular cosplay contest, with the results forming a special theme week. We invite all cosplayers, costumers and photographers to submit pictures of their work that relates to the theme (or any cosplay in general!) to our Flickr group to be considered. We'll then pick our top choices and post them on Gamma Squad for the adoration of all.

Our current theme is:

  • Elseworlds and What Ifs..!

For now, enjoy this week's selection.

Bryce Dallas Howard Promises To Chase Dinosaurs In ‘Jurassic World’

Bryce Dallas Howard in Jurassic Park 4

Back in September, we heard Bryce Dallas Howard received an offer to star in Jurassic World, the fourth installment of Jurassic Park. Now we have an official confirmation from Howard herself that she accepted the offer.

USA Today interviewed Bryce Dallas Howard and her dad, Ron Howard ("Opie" if ya nasty). While talking about her upcoming projects, she told them, "They're relaunching the Jurassic Park franchise, so I'll be chasing dinosaurs. That's going to happen next year."

*singing* Don't go chasing dinosaurs, just stick to the lizards and the snakes that you're used to...

Anyway, I'm cool with this. She's so classy and elegant, maybe they'll make the relaunch an extra fancy upstairs-downstairs sort of affair...

Chris Hemsworth And Conan Team Up To Diss Thor’s ‘Stumpy Mallet’

Screen Shot 2013-11-08 at 2.05.55 AM

Chris Hemsworth brought the Marvel promotion juggernaut to 'Conan' to promote 'Thor: The Dark World' and may have inadvertently angered numerous fan boys in the process by dissing Thor's magical hammer.

"It's kinda ridiculous isn't it...I'll have the really large hammer head with the short stumpy shaft thing."

And to think I was sold on you playing one of my favorite heroes, you turncoat!

It was literally just the other day that I watched Stan Lee talk about Thor's trusty hammer and how it gives him all of these powers, including flight. And I was sold, thinking to myself about how amazing it is, the damage it can do and am I too old to buy one at the store.

Now all I can think about is a "short stumpy shaft." So congrats on the movie, Hemsworth. I hope it fails. You've lost me forever! Where's my message board!?

‘Killzone: Shadow Fall’ Lets You Kill Helghast Your Way

Screenshot from 2013-10-28 08:29:59

To this point, the Killzone games have been as blunt as their title; go in, blast the Helghast, repeat. As a result, they've been easy to dismiss if you like a bit more strategy in your bullet-spraying. Something Sony has taken personally, apparently, since now you can pretty much kill the way you want to.

At least that's the thrust of this fifteen minute video, showing four different approaches to missions, from the meatheaded "charge in with a shotgun" to the elegant "surprise them with a silenced weapon." It's actually surprisingly appealing how well these levels are laid out, but see for yourself...

One touch that's undeniably great is being able to mix and match approaches as needed, or as you feel like. Want to blow up some walls and kill your targets through the drywall? You can, even if this does raise the question of why we have intergalactic travel and are sticking with gypsum as a construction material. Want to sneak around like the specter of death? That works too.

True, it's not particularly ground-breaking overall; it actually comes off a bit like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and the slo-mo button and the X-ray vision tropes are getting a little stale. But it's nice to see a series at least make an effort to shake things up instead of just essentially being a rail shooter. It'll be interesting to see how other franchises approach the new hardware as we get closer to the "launch window" for both consoles.

‘Call Of Duty: Ghosts’ Fans Wreck Its Booth For A Free Copy

maxresdefault (4)

If you were at Milan Games Week, you could have gotten a $200 edition of Call of Duty: Ghosts. All you had to do was be at the booth right when it opened! There were no other requirements. Just. Be. First.

You might be thinking that this was poorly planned. And, boy, was it ever.

Here's an overview from Kotaku. Surprise! There was a small riot!

Not sure what the organisers were thinking, but accounts from the showroom floor say that after a civil enough start, as the crowd got bigger hundreds of people went crazy, rushing the booth. In the process, they trashed the thing, so badly that it had to be closed down.

An Italian reporter states they were "kicked and slapped" as fans tried to get their hands of the Extra Detritus Edition of Call of Duty: Ghosts. To be fair, the "Prestige" edition, which was the giveaway here, features a 1080p wearable camera that doesn't look half-bad, and might actually be of use after you get sick of the game, unlike last years' RC quadcopter. Yes, they sold a Call of Duty game with an RC vehicle.

Oh, and there's also a paracord bracelet, because Call of Duty fans don't have to deal with the Internet Tough Guy stereotype nearly enough in Activision's eyes. Anybody genuinely excited to get a paracord bracelet with the Call of Duty logo on it, thankfully a small subset of the game's fanbase, has a rich history of claiming to be a member of the Special Forces in YouTube comments ahead of them.

Still, neat camera or not, that's probably not worth trampling people for, especially since it'll be half price in a year anyway. Shame on you, Italian gamers, even if you aren't hardcore.

Pull List: Comics Coming Out 11/21/12

What will we have to be thankful for in the comics department today? Quite a lot, actually.

  • DC has the 52 Omnibus and a collection of Batman/Judge Dredd crossovers, which are actually pretty hard to find, so this hardcover is quite welcome.
  • Marvel launches Indestructible Hulk and Captain America, as well as wrapping up the surprisingly entertaining crossover Minimum Carnage. It’s a good day to be a Mark Waid or a Rick Remender fan.
  • Image launches Clone, about a man who discovers he is one and that all of his fellow clones are after his pregnant wife, and the miniseries Comeback, which is basically Freejack in reverse; people pulled out of time at the last second to save them. There’s also more Revival and a new Walking Dead trade.
  • Dark Horse has a new Baltimore one-shot and launches Number 13, a story about an amnesiac child with lasers, with a zero issue.
  • IDW wraps up their latest Rocketeer miniseries, and launches the mini Adventures of Augusta Wind, an all-ages fantasy by J.M DeMatteis that reads a lot like “Alice on Infinite Earths”, launches their new Judge Dredd ongoing, and finally has a second issue of Frankenstein: Alive, Alive!
  • And Boom! has more Bravest Warriors and launches Supurbia as an ongoing.

As always, the full list is under the cut: Let us know what you’re picking up, and let’s talk some comics.

‘Hitman: Absolution’ — The Review

Hitman: Absolution is the best argument ever made for video games to avoid storytelling altogether.

As a game, it’s often amazing, worth every minute of the six year wait and balancing the demands of modern gaming against the series’ traditional gameplay in often very clever ways.

As a story, it makes the movie look like Citizen Kane.

Let’s start with the game. There are twenty missions (!) in this game, all of them pretty meaty in their own way, although some are shorter and simpler than others. In some ways, there’s more variety here than there has ever been in the franchise, both in your mission objectives and how you can complete them. The level design is at once more sensible and less obvious: Just figuring out a kill, forget pulling Silent Assassin, in later missions will drive you pleasurably crazy.

That’s not even getting into the challenges, most of which consist of a photo and a cryptic hint about what to do and… that’s it. Even on Normal difficulty, it can be maddening.

It’s interesting to compare this to Blood Money in that way because the intervening six years have been kind and made IO Interactive bitter at the same time. Remember the standard load out in the last game? Gone here. You don’t have any syringes, any remote mines, just a fiber wire, perhaps your Silverballer, and what’s lying around. You’re going to have to get the lay of the land and improvise much more.

Of course, “what’s lying around” is pretty much anything that’s not nailed down, ranging from sniper rifles and remote explosives to pretty much anything that can be used to murder somebody. 47 is practically the Miles Davis of butchering mooks. And it’s gloriously fun.

Speaking of mooks, the AI has improved in some ways: You will no longer get shot for the crime of walking into a nightclub without a chicken costume on. It is a bit dumb in others; wait long enough and NPCs will settle back into their routines, even with a coworker dead in front of them. It’s still challenging, but it reinforces that you are playing a game, that you’re outwitting a computer, not a person.

Much of the game has been tweaked for the better: Disguises are much more crucial now, for example. If you’re dressed as an officer, police officers are more likely to spot you and blow your cover, so finding the right disguise, especially a rare disguise, can be crucial to some missions. Shooting is much improved, but not the best option. The cover system actually makes sense and is very, very useful for sneaking.

The Instinct system is also a nice touch. First of all, it’s not entirely necessary: You can get through most levels without it. Secondly, it’s a meter that depletes, and is also tied to, for example, the slow-mo system you can also use. It forces you to use that asset strategically and carefully.

In short, everything that the game could improve, as a game, IO Interactive went in and did. As a game, it is great.

Unfortunately, as a story it’s terrible. I don’t want to offer spoilers, since they’ll give away missions, but really, the only thing that saves the game story-wise is the incredibly dry sense of humor on display, which often manifests itself in the details and the NPC chatter. Sit on the edge of crowds: It’s a hoot to overhear cell phone conversations and snatches of what people are muttering about.

The main plot, however, is… well, it’s just so stupid that it turns into self-parody. This game is supposed to humanize Agent 47, but he’s a mass murderer who perpetually scowls and enjoys killing people. The only thing you think when faced with the girl the game centers around is “This guy is about the last person who should be a father figure”. The plot returns to the ridiculous cloning nonsense the games have never quite summarily dumped as the bad idea it is. It’s especially frustrating because they’ve got a great voice cast cleaning up some awful cut scenes: Powers Boothe and Keith Carradine stand out in particular.

Is this a dealbreaker? Not particularly. It just means you’ll be jamming the “skip cutscene” button a lot. The simple fact of the matter is that while the story is irrelevant, with the franchise, it has always been irrelevant. It’s the game we show up for, not the story it tells.

In the end, this is Hitman to its bones. If you like solving puzzles and shooting people, and sometimes solving puzzles BY shooting people, this is worth every penny.

DC Comics And David Goyer Conjure A John Constantine TV Show At NBC

John Constantine and Sad Keanu

DC Comics has announced their third TV series this season (Gotham Central and The Flash being the other ones). Deadline reports NBC has picked up a Warner/DC adaptation of Constantine, based on the cynical British con-man and magician turned supernatural detective John Constantine, not to be confused with the Keanu Reeves portrayed by Keanu Reeves in 2005 s Constantine.

The show will be written and produced by David Goyer (co-writer of Man Of Steel and Nolan's Batman trilogy) and Daniel Cerone (producer of The Mentalist). As far as we know, the movie version of the character instrumental to Guillermo Del Toro's Dark Universe is still in development.

Constantine's contract stipulates there will be a penalty for NBC if they don't air the show. John Constantine knows what a shaft those contracts with penalties are.

The Pentagon Wants Its Creepy Robot Horse To Be Silent And Bulletproof

Big_dog_military_robots

Boston Dynamics continues to "improve" its Big Dog robot. Not content with giving it an arm for a head that can throw cinder blocks, the Pentagon has asked for the Big Dog to be more quiet. Also bulletproof. OH GOODY.

The LS3 Support System, better known to robophiles (as in people who like robots, not our own admittedly highly loveable Robopanda) as "Big Dog", just got an extra ten million in funding from DARPA. Why?

Within the general scope of work of Phase 2, the modification adds additional tasks to the contract for the development of an enhanced version of the LS3 system with increased reliability and usability, enhanced survivability against small arms fire and a quiet power supply to support stealthy tactical operations.

Just to review, Big Dog can already do this:

width="650" height="400" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/2jvLalY6ubc?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

But, as you can tell, that whole repetitive tap-tap thing makes it impossible for this thing to sneak up behind you, grab you by the neck, and strangle you. So, by all means, let's get on that thing! Silent superstrong nightmare fuel, your tax dollars at work!

Hey, while we're at it, can we fit it with a saddle so Boston Dynamics' other terrifying robot, Atlas, so one can ride the other like a horse? A Terminator atop a robot horse with a face-hand that can throw things would be an awesome thing to see right before it inevitably kills you.

Of course, this might not be the last thing you see, considering that recently an F-16 fighter jet was converted to fly completely unmanned and remotely. So you actually might suddenly dissolve in a red mist courtesy of robo-Maverick.

So, uh, anybody want to help me build a whole bunch of extremely powerful electromagnets? I'll let you live in my compound!

Arnold Schwarzenegger To Attack Planet Catsex In ‘Avatar 2′?

Arnold Schwarzenegger To Play The Villain In Avatar 2?

Pictured: Arnold Schwarzenegger signing an executive order to bomb Planet Catsex.

We haven't heard much about James Cameron's Avatar sequels since Sigourney Weaver was dropping hints in February and May of last year. We've also heard he's planning three sequels, each from different screenwriters (Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa/Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno, respectively). And we've heard Avatar 2's production may start next year for a December 2016 release date.

Now Latino Review claims to know who will play the villain in Avatar 2: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In terms of story, the first sequel will pick up after the events of the first film, when Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) permanently transfers his consciousness to his Na'vi avatar and begins a new life with Princess Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) after they defeat the human colonizers. [...] In fact, according to top level sources, a bad guy human general is going to be played by someone who hasn't worked with James Cameron in almost 20 years. Ready? It's none other than... ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER! [Latino Review]

Schwarzenegger - who worked with Cameron in Terminator 1 and 2 and True Lies - has already stated a desire to work with Cameron again.

Ah, but will Schwarzenegger continue to pronounce the title as "Abadah"?

Valve Confirms They’ll Reveal The Steam Box Next Week

4426812413_bd584e8fc2_b

Hey, were you planning on buying a next generation console? You might want to hold off until next week, when Valve will finally reveal the Steam Box, as well as its plan for console dominance.

This comes from none other than Gabe Newell, who apparently likes to bury marketing about massive product announcements safely in the middle of massive presentations about Linux. The whole presentation is really only interesting if you're a total nerd. So here's all twenty three minutes of it!

Gabe gets into building games, shipping them, and why, precisely, he feels Linux is the future. But there's a lot more to his statement than just "We're making a console, guys!"

"Next week we're going to be rolling out more information about how we get there and what are the hardware opportunities that we see for bringing Linux into the living room and potentially pointing further down the road to how we can get it even more unified with mobile."

I've been pounding this drum for a while. A company as forward thinking as Valve has to be wondering what the future is for a PC gaming developer and distributor when increasingly it's tablets built on Android that are selling the most. Developing for Linux is the first step for that.

Steam For Android is probably not arriving tomorrow. But make no mistake, it's definitely in the works. And one hopes that Google is paying attention; being able to put Steam Powered on the side of most Android boxes would go a long way towards giving Google the market share, and eyeballs, it wants so much.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Is Planned Out Through 2021

At this rate they're all getting a movie.

At this rate they're all getting a movie.

Wired recently wrote an article on the guy who makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe happen, Kevin Feige. He was there when it first started, he's the one laying the roadmap... and he let slip an interesting nugget during the interview.

The whole article is actually fairly fascinating; Feige comes off like a nerd livin' the dream. But for our purposes, the relevant item is this:

"I could arguably say what we're planning for the year 2021," Feige told WIRED. "Will that happen? I don't know. But what we planned for 2015 in 2006 is happening."

This raises the question of what his plan is, in the first place. We know sequels to Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers are on the way, and Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man are in the works. And that there are three unnamed films on the way for 2016 and 2017. But man, that's a tantalizing hint.

We know what a few of these movies will be: Black Panther was heavily hinted at a while back and Doctor Strange has been in development for a while as well. But Marvel has also been pretty consistent, putting out two movies a year, every year, since 2011. 2014 and 2015 are holding to the same pattern.

So if that holds, there are another eight movies Marvel is thinking about making, and they can't all be sequels. Let the speculation begin!

‘This Porno Has Too Much Nudity’: The ‘Kick-Ass 2′ Crew Comment On Jim Carrey (VIDEO)

Jim Carrey in Kick-Ass 2

Jim Carrey disavowed Kick-Ass 2 back in June, saying he couldn't support the level of violence after the Sandy Hook shootings. (To be fair, Kick-Ass 2 is awesomely violent.) Carrey is not on the movie's press tour now, which might get super awkward when media outlets ask everyone else there about his absence. Oh, what do we have here? A video of Digital Spy doing just that? Roll that beautiful bean footage.

Writer Mark Millar, director Jeff Wadlow, and stars Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse seem to be in agreement that Jim Carrey calling the movie too violent is the best thing that could happen. Millar claims they've received $30 million worth of free publicity from the mainstream media because of those two tweets by Jim Carrey, including 20 minutes of free coverage on Good Morning America. Wait, Good Morning America is still a thing? Ugh.

Millar also said, "I'm delighted with Jim Carrey, this is amazing. For your main actor to publicly say, 'This movie is too violent for me' is like saying, 'This porno has too much nudity.'"

He said it in a Scottish accent, though, so you may have thought he was saying, "This power cord is tuna noodley."

4 Other Video Games From Acclaimed Comic Book Writers That Need To Happen

gammasquadcomicgames1

As we reported yesterday, Neil Gaiman is making a video game called Wayward Manor, which sounds like it's going to be just about as Gaiman-esque as possible. See, you play as a ghost who must scare an array of eccentric people out of your gothic 1920s mansion. How delightfully macabre!

Well that got me thinking - what if other acclaimed comic book writers with a thing for dark themes got into making video games? Well, I think that comedy premise might look a little something like this...

gammasquadcomicgames2

IT ALL COUNTS!

Grant Morrison's Meta Mario

Grant Morrison has cast his spell on Nintendo and been given complete control of the Mario universe. From this point on, every incarnation of the plumber, from Captain Lou Albano to miscolored versions of Mario from Chinese bootlegs count. Adventure through a randomized collection of worlds based on everything from Mario Galaxy to Hotel Mario to the live-action Mario Bros. movie.

In Meta Mario, challenge yourself to master the new camera system that places the viewpoint in front of Mario, making it seem as though he's constantly running towards the screen in a bid to escape his twisted reality. Also, every copy of the game will ship with a camera, allowing Mario to constantly drop darkly comic quips about what you're doing. Stages end with an animation of Mario crashing into the screen and briefly "breaking through the fourth wall" before being sucked back into one of an infinite number of parallel universes.

New power-ups will include the Pig suit, Sperm suit and the bald mushroom, which turns you into Grant Morrison himself.

5 Kinds Of Games You Need To Play This Summer

gammasquadsummergamestitle

I’ve never really understood the bad rap summer has with gamers. Okay, sure, not a lot of games are released during the summer months, but in my opinion it’s the best time to actually play games. You have more free time, and come on, it’s not like you’re going to spend most of it outside. There’re bugs and heat and annoying people who might try to foist a game of Frisbee on you out there!

In fact, I think there are certain kinds of games that should ideally only be played during the summer months whist covered in a glistening layer of sweat. Such as…

Beach & Playstation controller via Shutterstock

A Good Meaty RPG

Being a major RPG fan I’ve of course played them during all seasons, but the ones that have really stuck with me are the ones I’ve played in marathon sessions over the summer. No other season is better for sitting down for a full afternoon of delicious grindy catatonia.

Need some suggestions? A new, sadistic-as-usual Atlus dungeon hack, Shin Megami Tensei IV hits this week, or you could grab the super beautiful Studi Ghibli RPG Ni No Kuni, which came out earlier this year. The latest Fire Emblem is pretty goddamn great as well.

A Game You’re Afraid Might Be Bad

Summer’s a time to let your hair down, take some chances and have some fun. Summer doesn’t judge man! Now’s the time to buy that game that got dumped on by reviewers, but you think looks totally fun anyways. It’s understandable if you don’t want to take a chance on something potentially bad during the holiday triple-A crush, but what do you have to lose during the summer? Currently I’m playing a lot of Game & Wario (Metacritic of 61) and having a perfectly cromulent time.

Find out if Remember Me is really as pretentious as people say. Grab that $5 copy of Resident Evil 6 and see what all the hoopla was about. Man up and play some crap!

Hotshot New Crime Novelist Robert Galbraith Is Actually JK Rowling Pretending To Be A Man

(via Getty Image)

Earlier this year Sphere, a part of the Little, Brown & Co. publishing family, published The Cuckoo's Calling, a crime novel by a first-time author named Robert Galbraith. Galbraith’s author bio says the following:

After several years with the Royal Military Police, Robert Galbraith was attached to the SIB (Special Investigative Branch), the plain-clothes branch of the RMP. He left the military in 2003 and has been working since then in the civilian security industry. The idea for Cormoran Strike grew directly out of his own experiences and those of his military friends who returned to the civilian world.

Critics loved the book. Publisher’s Weekly wrote that it “combines a complex and compelling sleuth and an equally well-formed and unlikely assistant with a baffling crime…a stellar debut.” On July 7th an Amazon reviewer named Karen wrote, “This book is so well written that I suspect that some years down the road we will hear the author’s name is a pseudonym of some famous writer.”

As it turns out, Karen was on to something: today it was revealed that Robert Galbraith is actually Harry Potter author JK Rowling.

Reports the New York Times:

In one of the great publishing coups in recent years, "The Cuckoo's Calling," which has sold just 1,500 copies in Britain so far, turns out to have been written not by an ex-British Army officer, or by a new writer, or even by a man. Instead, its author is J. K. Rowling, whose Harry Potter novels have made her one of the world's best-selling, and best-known, authors.

Ms. Rowling was unmasked by The Sunday Times of London, which, acting on an anonymous tip, embarked on a sleuthing mission of its own and published the result on Sunday. In the article, Ms. Rowling confessed to the ruse and spoke somewhat wistfully of her brief, happy foray into anonymous authorship.

"I had hoped to keep this secret a little longer, because being Robert Galbraith has been such a liberating experience," she said in a statement. "It has been wonderful to publish without hype or expectation, and pure pleasure to get feedback under a different name."

How the discovery that Galbraith is actually Rowling was made is also sort of fascinating…

The story of how The Sunday Times uncovered the truth is an odd one that involves, as seems so often the case these days, Twitter. It started on Thursday, said Richard Brooks, the paper's arts editor, after one of his colleagues happened to post a tweet mentioning that she had loved "The Cuckoo's Calling," and that it did not seem as if the book had been written by a novice.

"After midnight she got a tweet back from an anonymous person saying it's not a first-time novel - it was written by J. K. Rowling," Mr. Brooks said in an interview. "So my colleague tweeted back and said, 'How do you know for sure?' "

The person replied, "I just know," and then proceeded to delete all his (or her) tweets and to close down the Twitter account, Mr. Brooks said. "All traces of this person had been taken off, and we couldn't find his name again."

How much you wanna bet that someone who works at Little, Brown & Co. was the person behind the leaky tweets?

The PC Master Race Is Hilariously Offended Over ‘Diablo III’ Coming To Consoles

Diablo III did not do well in our reviews. But the fact that it’s coming to PS3 and PS4 is a pretty big deal, making Blizzard yet another company that de facto treats the PC as another console platform.

You’d think, of course, that being available as a PC exclusive for coming up on a year now, PC gamers would be satisfied.

You’d be wrong.

Kotaku excerpts a now sadly-deleted conspiracy theory from a Battle.Net forum member that Diablo III was, like, totally meant for consoles from the start, you guys. And it’s simultaneously funny and kind of sad, watching angry Diablo fans pile up to roar about how it’s not fair that, uh, er, PS3 owners will get to pay $60 to play a year old game using a control method it wasn’t designed for. We’ve included a few rebuttals.

Diablo 3 was setup to be a console game.

The reason only 4 players are allowed into a game is for 4 controllers.

Honestly, if this game actually has four-player local multiplayer, that would be a great thing. We rank it roughly as likely as Kate Upton asking any of the Gamma Squad crew out for burgers.

The reason the quests make you walk in a linear closed circuit as opposed to big open worlds, is to keep your buds next to you on the same screen.

Oh, yeah, because Diablo III presents such vivid graphical challenges. Come on, guy, it looks good but it doesn’t look THAT good.

The reason for no skill points or complicated number crunching? To make console players happy.

Yeah, console players hate number crunching, especially those Final Fantasy jocks. Notice that an ongoing theme here is that console players are stupid.

The reason you have 4-5 skills on your bar at once? Very easy to use an Xbox/Ps3 controller to use skills.

This actually we think he has a point. We’re skeptical that this was always the intent, but it does line up pretty well.

The reason no runes / complicated item mechanics exists. Simply wouldn’t be fun for console gamers.

Or, you know, Blizzard wants you to sell crap at the Real Money Auction House. But a for-profit company? Wanting to make money? That’s cah-ray-zee!

The reason you can’t host a named game? Auto join for console users.

Again, he has a point here, although we suspect Blizzard had different reasons for this. Namely if somebody decided to name their game “C***F**” or something, Blizzard would have to shut down the entire game down.

The reason for achievements in game? It’s popular among console / COD fans.

I know somebody who doesn’t use Steam!

The reason for passive skills? Perks like Call of Duty uses. Everyone unlocks perks and uses their favorite ones.

Having played the game, this isn’t console-specific. It’s pretty clearly a gameplay choice designed to make the game more accessible.

PC gamers are just beta testing for the console release so it wont be full of bugs. That’s how ActiBlizz intends to make the real money.

First of all, PC development and console development are… slightly different. Secondly, Diablo III sold 12 million copies on PC alone. That’s $720 million retail before you factor in the Real Money Auction House. More to the point, those are big numbers for any game. If you look on a console by console basis, moving five million copies on any one platform is usually enough to get you into the top twenty best sellers of all time. Call of Duty sells twenty million or so, but that’s across all platforms. By any reasonable standard, Diablo is potentially a much bigger franchise.

Don’t get us wrong: Diablo III for consoles was pretty obviously in the cards, because Blizzard likes money, and the way modern-day game development works, the more platforms you put a game on, the more money you make. There’s an excellent reason the PS4 is, in the broad strokes, a gaming PC in terms of specs, and by all accounts, the Next Xbox is similar: It will save third parties on development costs because they can make the game for PC, then tune it to the consoles.

But it also seems unlikely this was the plan from the start. While there’s a lot that’s terrible about Diablo III, mostly with its abusive always-on DRM policy and oddly out-of-touch handling of its community, it is first and foremost a game built around the mouse.

Honestly, to make the game remotely playable on consoles, and it seems unlikely this won’t be headed to the Xbox 360, Blizzard is going to have to engage in major changes. We’ll be curious to see what those are.

Yoda Has Big Football Dreams (And Other Mashups)

Good afternoon you princes of Maine, you kings of New England, you stalkers of Joel McHale. Here are all the mashup and parody videos I didn't get a chance to cover, thrown in your face like you're Jodie Foster working for the FBI.

In the offing for today:

  1. FIRST VIDEO: The rumored Yoda spin-off movie gets a trailer thanks to Conan. [via Topless Robot]
  2. SECOND VIDEO: Here’s The Big Bang Theory‘s opening credits in Game of Thrones style for some reason. I’d start watching The Big Bang Theory if there were more beheadings. [Thanks to Matin for sending this in.]
  3. THIRD VIDEO: This re-cut of Jaws: The Revenge was sent in by Scott, who says, “So I'm not exactly proud of myself here, but I got a little bored and then overly-focused last night, and stayed up until 3 AM recutting the trailer for Jaws: The Revenge. But I tried to cut it as if it was a critically acclaimed indie film, instead of giant heap of trash.”
  4. FOURTH VIDEO: You know what could make the Super Mario Bros. movie make even less sense? Audio from A Good Day To Die Hard. Yeah, I don’t know either. [via HYST]
  5. Banner picture: “Plumber Man,” an Anchorman and Super Mario Brothers mashup T-shirt by nikholmes. [via]
