Hobbit Week on ‘The Colbert Report’ – McKellen on Gandalf VS Magneto, Freeman Becomes LEGO

This week everything’s about Hobbitses on The Colbert Report. Stephen Colbert, whom Peter Jackson himself has heralded as the biggest Tolkien fan, decorated his studio with all things Middle Earth and has been brandishing Sting from under his desk. On Monday and Tuesday he had Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman as guests. Tonight and Thursday he’ll host Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis. Basically, if there’s one program you need to be watching before you see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey next week, it’s The Colbert Report, or rather, The Pundit: Colbert and Back Again.

In his interview with McKellen, watch it below, Colbert asked the one question all nerds have been dying to ask, Gandalf vs Magneto, who wins?

I have to admit I’d choose the same. I mean, Gandalf’s a freakin’ wizard! Watch the entire episode as it’s chocked full of great Tolkien gags. I particularly love the opening animation displaying New York City like a map from Middle Earth. Hehe, Hispter’s Deep.

Last night the guest was Bilbo Baggins himself, Martin Freeman, and they discussed Colbert winning the Tolkien trivia quiz against Phillipa Boyens as well as Freeman’s proudest moment: becoming LEGO.

Yes, dragons are inherently sexy. Especially when voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. Make sure you watch this whole episode, if only for Colbert smoking some of that fine Middle Earth weed. And don’t forget to watch tonight and tomorrow for Peter Jackson, Andy Serkis, and more Hobbit-y goodness!
