Smell Like Captain America With This Avengers Cologne Set

If you can’t have superhero powers, you might as well smell like one. The Avengers Assembled Cologne Set is now available in the Nerd Approved Shop!

The set comes with four fragrances representing Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor. Each scent is supposed to smell just like the character, but I don’t know how they figured it out. I’d be very interested to sample each of these. If nothing else though, the bottles are cool and given the affordable price, I’d consider buying them just to put on display.

Avengers Assembled Cologne Set – $59.99

Interviews: R.L. Stine Talks Spooks, Scares, ‘The Haunting Hour’, and ‘Red Rain’

If you were born anytime after 1980, chances are that the last thing you saw everynight before you went to bed was the page of an R.L. Stine book. Stine, the master of horror for kids and pre-teens has been at it for 20 years, churning out over 100 “Goosebumps” books, a TV series, and now Hub TV’s R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour.

Last week I had the chance to chat with Mr. Stine, armed with questions crafted by myself and my newfound partner in crime, Anne Sisk, and I got to ask the King of Spookiness what scares him, why we want to be scared, how it is writing children’s books in the internet age, and all about the challenges of writing his adult novel, Red Rain. Here is what Mr. Stine had to say:

Is it harder to scare kids now and have you changed your style at all with kids increasingly moving away from books and turning to TV and the Internet and that kind of thing?

I don't accept that, kids are reading a lot. Years ago the children's book business was tiny, it was a very small part of a publisher and now it's a billion dollar industry. Kids are reading. Children's book sales are up eight percent for this year so I think kids are reading which is a really wonderful thing.

I really haven’t had to change much, when you write scary books you don't have to change much because the fears never really change. You know; being afraid of the dark, being afraid of what's under the bed ready to grab you, being afraid that you’re being chased, that never changes so that's kind of lucky for me."

Why do you think we want to be scared by spooky stories when we're little and even now as adults?

Well, I think kids like to be scared a lot, but they have to know they're safe at the same time. It's really fun to go out and have these creepy adventures and fight the monsters and battle all this adversity if you know that you're safe reading in your room at the same time. And I'm very careful with my books, like with the Goosebumps, that kids have to know that this is a fantasy. This is fantasy horror, this isn't going to happen, this can't happen to you. Yeah, it's very creepy, but they have to know that it can't happen and it's not going to go too far.

Has there ever been a fear or a theme or an image where you've started to go in that direction and then you've had to pull yourself back, you didn't want to go that far. Is there anything you consider "off-limits"?

Very rarely, I'm kind of conservative with it. A lot of times my editors are saying "Hype it up. Make it scarier, make it scarier." I hear that a lot more. Every once in a while I will, like the very first Goosebumps book is called Welcome to the Dead House, this kid moves to a new town and all these kids come up to him and say "I used to live in your house" and it was the very first one I did and they're all like zombie kids and they're out to get him and right now I think it was too scary. I think that book went too far, the first Goosebumps book.

And after that one I kind of realized it and I pulled back and I started adding a lot more humor.

Is there still a challenge for you? You’ve been doing this for so long.

I find it much more of a challenge cause it's twenty years of Goosebumps, twenty years, it's over one hundred books and so I guess I've done every story you could possibly do, right? So to find new scares and new plot lines and not repeat myself has become a lot more of a challenge, but that's kind of fun for me.

How do you, just as a writer I have to ask, how are you that prolific? How are you able to day in and day out pump out high quality material like that for such a long period of time?

I don't know, it's the only thing I've ever been good at, you can ask my wife really. It's the only thing I'm competent at and I just love it, I've been doing it since I was nine years old and I still look forward to getting up and sitting down at the computer and banging out ten more pages a day and getting new stories.

I don't know what else I would do all day, but the writing is fun for me because I do so much planning first. I do all my planning before I write.

I chart out the whole book; I do very complete outlines of every book I write before I sit down to write, so by the time I'm writing I know everything that's going to happen in the book. And then I can just fill out the outline and have fun with the writing and enjoy it and that helps me I think to turn out more books than having to plot it as I go.

I noticed in the 'Weeping Woman' episode of the Haunting Hour series, I noticed a bit more social commentary and implied marital trouble, are kids these days responding to that kind of stress more? Can you now add those kinds of pressures?

I don't do it much, but the Haunting Hour is sort of aimed more for teenagers and for families and so they're pushing it a little farther, the writers. They decided to make the Haunting Hour a bit darker then the Goosebumps books and they're teenagers instead of kids involved so they’re getting into some of those issues that I wouldn't do in the books.

In the 'Weeping Woman' the basis of the story is the myth of La Llorona, so you kind of have this cross-cultural terror happening. Do you find yourself pulling inspiration from different cultures like this or is it more like these are certain fears that undercut all cultural differences?

I think the fears all are the same, but there are wonderful legends in all these cultures and it would be nice to be able to explore them. But that's the same fear, that statue is not very much different from Lilly D, that doll that came to life is it?

You just released Red Rain, which is a novel that’s targeted for adults. What's the bigger challenge: creeping out and scaring kids or scaring adults?

Oh for me scaring adults because I'm not used to it, so it's a much bigger challenge and I just wrote it because I thought I needed a challenge. Kids' books are a lot of fun and they're so easy, they really are a pleasure for me and I thought why not do something hard? Why don't I do something a little more ambitious?

And then I have all my readers from the 90s who've grown up, all those Goosebumps/Fear Street readers who were 10 back then are all in their 20s and 30s, and they've been telling me "write for us, please write something for us". So that's why I wrote Red Rain, but I found it was a challenge.

How long did it take you to write it?

Five months and I did research for a month, mainly on that island. You know, it takes place on an outer banks island off South Carolina and I've never been there, so I just sort of deliberately did it as a game for myself to see if I could really research it and get it right and get all the details right; the vegetation, the birds and do it right. So, I spent about a month doing research and then five months writing it which is a lot for me because the Goosebumps books take a couple weeks.

Is that something you want to continue to pursue. do you want to keep writing for adults or mix and match?

If people like it, yeah I'd enjoy doing more. I love writing for my original audience, I mean those are my kids, those are my people from back in the 90s and I love writing for them, but it just depends if it's a hit or not. If people really buy it and enjoy it I would love to do more otherwise nobody will ask me to do more.

I’m sure that won’t be a problem.

They won’t answer my calls.

What scares you?

I have no good answer for that, I don't get scared. I have normal adult fears of course, but horror doesn't scare me at all. I go to a scary movie or something I don't know what that feeling is of being scared, I always laugh. When I read a horror novel it makes me laugh, I always find horror funny.

People say "Oh, I was up all night because of your book, you scared me so badly" — I wish I could feel that. I've never had that feeling I always find that funny.

Who is your favorite horror writer? If you have one.

Steven King is, I think he's a wonderful story teller and there are a couple of Steven King books that I think are amazing. Pet Cemetery is one and Misery is another book I just think are brilliant, maybe the best book ever written about writers and editors.

R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour airs on Hub TV at 6PM ET on Saturdays and you can learn more about the show here. If you want to pick up a copy of Red Rain, you can get it at Amazon.com and wherever fine books are sold.

Take On Hoth With This Giant AT-AT Costume

This Halloween is apparently the year to dress as a vehicle from Star Wars. I must have missed the memo because yesterday we saw an AT-ST costume, and today brings a two person AT-AT Imperial Walker costume.

Stkmach on Instructables wanted to do something big this year, and he succeeded. His 1:6.5 scale AT-AT takes two people to operate and measures over 10′ tall and 12′ long. The frame was built from PVC, and the skin was corrugated plastic (just like the AT-ST). He had to work stilts into the rig too so that it could actually move. I hope he teams up with the AT-ST and that they find a rebel base to threaten soon.

See a few in-progress photos after the break.

New ‘Hobbit’ Photos – Radagast, Galadriel, The Great Goblin King, and More!

You would imagine that by now the most recent issue of Empire featuring a bevy of Hobbit goodness would have been picked clean. Well, it has, but you may not have seen all it had to offer. The diligent folks at CBM have found more images scanned in from the magazine for us to check out. Featured here is the best look yet the Goblin King – grotesque lookin’ guy, isn’t he? – and new shots of Radagast (Sylvestor McCoy), Galadriel (Cate Blanchet), and more.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey release not soon enough, on December 14th.

Youmacon 2012 !

Are you going to Youmacon ? Me too ! I managed to find an inexpensive flight out of Los Angeles for $131 each way. BOO-YAH ! That's a pretty good deal if I say so myself. So this is my last big con of the year and what's best is this is a con on my bucket list ! I've been meaning to go to Youmacon for a few years now and so this is my opportunity.

Youmacon is a pretty new convention relatively speaking. It started in 2005 and managed to gain attendance quickly over the years - last count it was over 10,000. Based in Detroit, MI and is one of the three biggest anime cons in the Midwest (the others are Anime Central and Ohayocon).

Now, since I can not get an artist alley table at such a short notice and I know there's many of y'all who are interested in purchasing the book, I came up with an alternative plan. Buy the book for $40 right now and I will bring your copy personally to you at Youmacon and signed it there. And give hugs. And stickers. Mostly hugs. And smiles.

So get a clicking ! Oh, by your way, make sure you put your cell phone number as well as name (if your parent is buying the book) in the notes section before checking out. I am only bringing enough copies to those who pay. I will *not* be selling any books at the con.  It's against the regulations and plus, I don't want to carry any more than I have to - imagine dragging all these books through the airport !

One more thing. It'll ask for your zip code but don't worry, shipping is zero out.

Where to find me ???

Thurs : Arrive that night ...like midnight. Yeah, that is why the fare was $131. Friday : Cosplaying as Brief (Panty & Stocking). Walk around, check out the con, take photos, do video interviews.Sat.  : Normal clothes, taking photos / video of cosplayers. I'll be out and around.

Sun. : I may be around but it will be later during the day. I may have another job while in town so there's a chance I may not even be at the con that day.

Mon : Early, early morning fly back to L.A. Yeah, that is why the fare was $131.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at Detroit !

*dance a jig*

I Hope This AT-ST Walker Costume Won All The Contests

Scott Holden doesn’t kid around when it comes to constructing costumes. A few years ago, he made a tauntaun. This year, he tackled something on the same scale: an AT-ST Walker. Yes, he is the most awesome.

First he ordered a small Snap-tite plastic model and used it to reverse engineer all the parts through a very tedious process with calipers and a protractor. Scaled to a factor of 20, he drew and cut the parts from corrugated plastic. Lots of foam, time, and paint later, he had an AT-ST Walker he could walk under and control.

See more photos of the costume and a video of it in action after the break.

Check out more detail on the build in the link below.

Live Action Trailer – COD: Black Ops II – Everything’s Better With More Robert Downey Jr.

Activision has a new trailer out for it’s upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II game and they’ve upped the celebrity bar with none other than Robert Downey Jr.You might remember that Activision used Jimmy Kimmel, and Kobe Bryant in their last Black Ops commercial in 2010.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II hits store shelves worldwide on November 13, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The game story line and soundtrack was created by David S. Goyer (co-writer of The Dark Knight Rises) and Trent Reznor (Academy Award-winning composer of The Social Network).

The single-player campaign will feature two connected storylines, one set in the 1970s through 1980s and the other in 2025. The protagonist of Black Ops, Alex Mason returns as the protagonist in the Cold War section, where he will be fighting in proxy wars for the United States in the Cold War. Known locations for this section of the game include multiple sites in Central America and in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion. This section of the game will also see the rise to infamy of the game’s primary antagonist, Raul Menendez. Mason’s friend and colleague Frank Woods will also return, and narrate the story into the 2025 section of the game. The 2025 section of the game features Alex Mason’s son David as a protagonist. In it, a new cold war has broken out between China and the United States after China bans the export of rare earth elements following a cyberattack that cripples the Chinese Stock Exchange. In this era, war is defined by robotics, cyber warfare, unmanned vehicles and other modern technology. Taking advantage of this stand-off, Menendez attempts to bring the two powers to a full-blown war by inciting conflicts between the two. Known locations for this section of the game include Los Angeles, Singapore and Socotra, Yemen.

In the 2025 section of the game, the player will have access to special ‘Strike Force missions’, that feature permanent death and the outcome of which can affect the course of the campaign’s storyline. It has been hinted at that the side-plot of Viktor Reznov and his relationship with Alex Mason, which began in Black Ops, will be continued in Black Ops II.

BATMAN WALLPAPERS Extravaganza!!

Yes, I used the word, "Extravaganza!", in the title, ha ha! Actually today is "Wacky Wallpaper Wednesday". It's a tradition I started a long time ago because I enjoy making BATMAN Wallpaper Backgrounds but, over the years, it has become way more difficult. Why? Because now there are hundreds of different screen-size resolutions and it's way harder to please everybody. See, a few years ago almost everyone that read this site all, pretty much, had the same size. So, I decided to bring it back today and I'm using 1440 X 900 as the main size because that pleases most people. But, for the few that can't use them, I'm sorry.

Anyways, the first one is sort of a Tribute to 1960's Batman Merchandise and the 2nd Bat-Background uses some cool Fan Art showing a more modern-day version. Oh yeah, last minute I decided to throw-in the one with the stitched mouth. That's the cover to a very recent comic book. Enjoy!

Cinefex Magazine - The Dark Knight Rises Batman Movie Issue #131 in Stores Now!

Back in the late 1980's I had a friend named John who was an extremely serious Video Photographer. In fact, he went on to work on many TV Commercials & even some Hollywood films. The reason I bring him up is that he always reminds me of Cinefex Magazine. He used to totally worship this publication like a Religion, ha! It's a pretty unique magazine in the way that it covers Camera Techniques, Special Effects, Film Specs, Lighting, Sound eFX, etc... I mean it, this isn't one of those mags that talk about stupid celebrity gossip, it's a serious look at the real behind-the-scenes type stuff about how they REALLY make movies.

Anyways, I wanted to send a shout-out to my friend John and let him know that the latest issue of Cinefex #131 covers everything about THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Batman Movie.

It also has some in-depth articles on the making of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, TOTAL RECALL, and ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER. This new issue is in stores now or you can order it online from their official website, just CLICK HERE!

Darth Maul - I've killed your master and now it is your turn to die, young Jedi! Or rather some cosplay...

darth-maul-costume-play

Darth Maul. Perhaps he was the only true iconic Star Wars character to come from the mess that was The Phantom Menace movie. He died a classic death at the hands of Obi Wan Kenobi and thus became a Star Wars legend... which is presumably why Darth is such a popular cosplay character choice!

Here's a few pictures of Darth Maul that I found around the place. You'll see that some of the make up jobs to get the character looking just right are pretty impressive!

I just thought of a really, really bad joke. Where does the Emperor shop for new Sith Lords? At the Maul.

Check out the make up job on the above picture, a lot of care went into it - check out the yellow eyes, that's commitment to detail!

Top Ten Megan Marie Cosplay Costumes

Megan Marie is perhaps the best known cosplayer around. She's been part of the gaming community for a fair while which has meant she's had enough time to do some awesome cosplay work and build quite a following. Here's what I think are her top ten cosplay moments.
This is one of my favourites that Megan has done, Anya Stroud from Gears of War - she managed to get some photos taken on an actual military vessel! That's pretty cool. Also check out that Lancer, it looks pretty close to the real deal.

Anya
Check out Megan as one of the most famous gaming characters, Lara Croft. This time with a twist of steam punk influence. Megan spent some real time on this one, read her post on how she put together the costume.

When I saw this below picture my first thought was that Megan had gone and done a cosplay version of Kelly Osborne but then a closer look showed quite clearly a pretty impressive homage to Batman's furry friend, Catwoman:

I bet this Mario makes a mean pasta
I'm afraid we're going to have to repeat ourselves a little bit but I'm sure you'll forgive me. Here's Megan doing a pretty fine version of Lara Croft:

We wrap up our top ten pictures of Megan Marie doing some amazing cosplay of the classic heroine, Wonder Woman. It's actually the eleventh picture as you can never have to much cosplay like this on your hands!

Nerds on the Red Carpet: The ‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3-D’ Premiere

On Wednesday evening we got a chance to attend the Silent Hill: Revelation 3D premiere at the ArcLight in Hollywood, CA. The film is written/directed by Michael J. Bassett (Cinemax’s Strike Back), produced by Samuel Hadida (Resident Evil: Afterlife), and stars Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Adelaide Clemons (The Great Gatsby), Sean Bean (Missing), and Carrie-Anne Moss (Vegas). The film is the sequel to Silent Hill, and is based on the groundbreaking video game franchise of the same name. The film synopsis states:

Heather Mason (Clemons) and her father (Bean) have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. On the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by horrific nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her forever.

At the red carpet event before the cast and crew screened the film, I got the opportunity to speak with Harington, Clemons, Hadida, and Bassett about the film. First up, I spoke to Kit Harington about what it was like to be in his first film following the success of the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones, which is also adapted from a previous work. Unlike Thrones, which is based on a best-selling book series by George R. R. Martin, I was curious what the experience was like to film a horror movie based off of a video game. Harington replied:

“I enjoyed them both, you know? I’m not used to working in this sort of industry, so to do anything is very exciting. I’ve always wanted to do a horror movie, so I really enjoyed doing this.”

After Harington finished talking to the press, he went over to the fans who had been waiting for hours just to see him. He then proceeded to take photos, and sign autographs. After I spoke with him, I got the opportunity to talk to the producer Samuel Hadida. Hadida was understandably very excited about the film, and had a lot to say about what fans could expect.

“Silent Hill is very influenced by Jacob’s Ladder.” Adding “We wanted to give you a more detailed version of Silent Hill. We wanted everybody who saw the first movie to be very excited to see their character back in the city of Silent Hill, and to fulfill their recollection of what happened six years later.”

After Hadida, I was lucky to get the chance to hear Adelaide Clemons thoughts on filming Silent Hill. When asked if she had previously done a horror movie, Clemons responded, “I have done several, but not one anyone would have ever seen.” She also thinks fans will find the plot of this film to be very interesting. One of the burning questions was whether or not she ever got scared filming the movie. Clemons said:

“Oh, yes, absolutely! As you will see, the monsters are really graphic, so you can’t help it.”

The last person I was able to talk to was the film’s writer/director Michael J. Bassett. Like Hadida, Bassett is a fan of the horror genre. When asked why he chose to direct the Silent Hill sequel, Bassett replied:

“I just like the horror movies. They’re the ones that I grew up with, you know? No matter what I do in any genre, I don’t know, maybe I’m just a creature kind of guy. If you’re going to make a movie, then make a movie you love.”

Bassett also talked about his upcoming project with David S. Goyer (Man of Steel) titled, Da Vinci’s Demons. It’s a television series that tells the “untold” story of Leonardo Da Vinci that is in the vein of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. He has also just wrapped the Cinemax series, Strike Back.

I wan’t able to screen the film, but from the trailer the special effects look really great. Also, Hadida revealed that there will be more monsters, and action in this film than the first. Also more of Sean Bean! Silent Hill: Revelation 3D opened nationwide today (October 26th).

G4 Announces Cancellation of ‘X-Play’ & ‘Attack Of The Show’

It’s the end of a nerdy era over at G4 TV. Today the network announced the cancellation of two of it’s longest running shows, Attack of the Show and X-Play.There’s not been any official word on what will replace the shows and it’s anyone’s guess at this point.

G4 posted the announcement on it’s web page:

G4′s two longest-running and defining series, Attack of the Show! and X-Play, will be ending their run at the end of 2012. Both shows will include original episodes through the end of the year, and will look back at their most memorable moments as we lead up to their final episodes. A rotating lineup of guest co-hosts including John Barrowman, Michael Ian Black, Josh Myers, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel and Horatio Sanz will join AOTS hosts Candace Bailey and Sara Underwood, and X-Play hosts Morgan Webb and Blair Herter as part of the farewell shows.

With well over a thousand episodes each, Attack of the Show! and X-Play have defined gamer culture for a generation, serving as the launch pad for prominent personalities including Kevin Pereira, Olivia Munn, Chris Hardwick and Adam Sessler. Attack of the Show! debuted March 28, 2005 and from the start was the ultimate guide to everything cool and new in the world of technology, web culture, gaming and pop culture. X-Play made its debut almost two years earlier, on April 28, 2003 (on G4's previous incarnation: TechTV), and immediately became the go-to destination for young men seeking the latest video game news, honest reviews, hands-on demos and exclusive video game trailers and footage. The year-end celebration will take you back through highlights of these landmark shows’ history, including its exclusive live-from-the-floor coverage of San Diego Comic-Con and E3.

Both long-running shows helped define, as well as expand, the pop culture and gaming TV experience for a generation. We hope you’ve had as much fun watching them as we have had making them, and sincerely hope you join us in bidding a fond farewell to Attack of the Show and X-Play’s as we look back over the next two months and head towards each series’ finale.

Now the question remains as to what will replace these shows. I only ever really watched the channel, on purpose that is, for Attack of the Show‘s coverage of Comic Con. Looking over what is left at G4 one can only wonder if there are replacement shows in the works or retools of the two canceled shows coming with a complete wipe of the existing programs.

What do I think will happen? Sadly, I think that G4 is going to go “Reality” shows, old movies, and repeats of old television shows.

What’s your take on this announcement? Let us know in the comments section below.

Superhero Costume Hoodies For Adults Includes Wolverine, Batgirl, TMNT and More!

I don’t know who decided that superhero costume hoodies were in this year, but I’m glad it’s happened. I was a little jealous because kids had so many options, but now there are tons of designs available for adults. Batgirl, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Superman, Iron Man – you can dress up like many of your favorite characters on a daily basis and all you have to do is zip up a sweatshirt. Brilliant.

Check out several more designs after the break.
