‘Arrow’ Has Found its ‘Flash,’ and He’s a Gleek

It's been a not-so-long and arduous search, but the producers of Arrow have found the young man who will take the part of Barry Allen in the second season of the series, and the potential spin-off series The Flash. His name is Grant Gustin, and if you don't know his name, then you're neither a fan of Glee or the recently defunk re-invention of 90210.

"I'm unbelievably excited. I've been a lifelong fan of DC Comics, so I can't be more honored and can't wait to get started," Gustin told The Hollywood Reporter.

As you'll recall, the addition of The Flash to Arrow's canon was announced at San Diego Comic Con. After Barry Allen appears in episodes 8 and 9, episode 20 of Arrow's second season will serve as a backdoor pilot to a potential Flash series that will premier during the 2014/15 TV season. Arrow co-creators Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and DC Comics co-publisher Geoff Johns will write the episodes and David Nutter will direct.

"When we first meet Barry Allen, he's just a forensic scientist ... an ordinary man," Kreisberg told reporters earlier this summer after The Flash was announced. Despite the grounded, realistic nature of Arrow, The Flash will still be the scarlet speedster we all know and love, and his alter ego Barry Allen will be a Central City forensic investigator and a bit of a comic book fanboy who's obsessed with the vigilante's exploits. The two worlds collide when a tragic case from Allen's past brings him to Starling City.

"We're also exploring a very personal story for Barry - life as a forensic scientist and the people around him, the tragedies and how he deals with them - in a very different way than Oliver Queen," explained Johns.

As for introducing super-powers into the previous ordinay world of Arrow, Kreisberg said, "There will be extraordinary events in the world and the characters will react in the same way."

"Part of the fun for the audience ... is to see how we view our Arrow take on the Flash legacy," he continued. "Some of it will feel very familiar to DC Comics, some of it hopefully will feel different, fresh and exciting. The same way we approached Arrow is the same way we're approaching Barry."

After Month of Silence: Ben Affleck Talks About Internet Batman Casting Reaction

The Internet Nerd Rage over the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman in Zack Snyder's upcoming Batman vs Superman, Man of Steel sequel has slowed down a bit, now maintaining a slow rolling boil, waiting for the proper spark to re-ignite the passions of those enraged at the casting. I was betting that Affleck's first official response to the outcry at his casting might just touch off another round of "Whack-A-Afleck" at the Internet Arcade.

Thankfully Ben Affleck took the one road that bypasses setting the Internet aflame again, the self-effacing, humorous road that might just get people to give him a chance.

Appearing on The Jimmy Fallon Show, Affleck talked about his children and how he came to take the role of Batman. Watch the video below and meet me on the other side to discuss.

What did you think? I think it was the right amount of humor, pointed at himself, along with confidence in his current abilities as an actor that creates a likable mixture for Affleck. We all know that he's not going to change the mind of any of those most ardent in their opposition until they see it on the big screen and Affleck nails it (hopefully). What this does is give him the breathing room with concerned fans, those upset, but not writing death threats in crayon on toilet paper.

How Will Batman’s Story End?

Titled The Ultimate Batman Comic, this very short comic by David Lasky seems eerily perfect, making it hard to argue with the title. As we know the character, I'm not sure most people would conclude the Dark Knight's story this way, but I think it's fittingly sad ending for our tragic hero.

For me, I was sort of shocked by the reaction I had to reading this; it kinda seemed like exactly what most people would do, but not what Batman would do. Supernatural fans might be reminded of the episode "What Is and What Should Never Be," which features a similar story of a hero going back to prevent what made them the hero that they are. Why can't they save themselves? Why can't they be happy? Well, because they are the heroes, that's why. While some people might see this as a sad ending, I'd say it's more pleasant than any alternative that we could expect for.

Like Dean though, I think Bruce would have the foresight to see that saving himself wouldn't save Gotham. Most likely anyone he ever saved or affected would've either died or went down a horrible path. He wouldn't save himself, he'd do what was right for Gotham. He makes the choice that no one else can make and all that...

So, what do you Bat-fans have to say about this short strip? Do you see it as a fitting end to Gotham's defender?

Brolin Confirms He Was Almost Bat-Cast, Feels for Batfleck Reaction

Actors don't normally talk about the roles they don't get, but let's face facts, Batman is no ordinary role. The recent casting of Ben Affleck in Batman Vs Superman provoked a - ahem - strong reaction amongst fans, and when the news broke, a lot of people had their own idea about who should have been cast as the Dark Knight instead. One of that names that came up was Josh Brolin, but now Brolin is talking about his own brush with the cape and cowl, and why he does not envy Affleck the daunting task ahead of him.

While talking recently with The Huffington Post, Brolin said that he was indeed under some kind of consideration for the part of Batman in Zack Snyder's sequel to Man of Steel. "I didn't have conversations about it, but Zack, that was part of his idea," Brolin explains, downplaying just how close he was to actually being cast indicating that it was more a gauging of interest on Snyder's part.

"It just didn't turn out. It's okay. It is okay. You know, another scenario might have worked better, but I'm happy for Ben."

At the same time though, Brolin says that he knows the type of pressure that Affleck is under now, and it's a pressure that Brolin himself doesn't care for. "I feel for him, truly. I would not want to be him right now," said Brolin when asked about the bat-lash against Batfleck. "Because of the Internet, man, I just feel for anybody who gets lambasted at that level. I want him to kick ass and I want everyone to love it and kind of eat their words."

Of course such extreme armchair quarterbacking in the case of casting a superhero movie is not exclusive to either Ben Afflack or the Superman movies. It does raise a provocative point though, how many other actors have been tempted to play a part in a comic book movie, but thought twice because they don't want to get caught up in an internet hack and slash? Sounds silly, I know, but these are sensitive actor-types after all.

Josh Brolin will next be seen in theaters everywhere in Spike Lee's remake of Oldboy on November 27.

Joss Whedon on Marvel Villains and Possible Death of a Character

It's always a pleasure to read what Marvel's movie kingpin has to say, regardless of the topic, and Joss Whedon's recent interview with EW was no exception. He covered a variety of topics; among them, the roles villains play in the Avengers movies, and the possibility of portraying the death of an Avenger on screen.

In regards to the villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Whedon doesn't plan on re-using any in the Avenger films.

Every movie is going to be a different villain. Loki's awesome, and he is awesome in 'Thor 2,' but 'The Avengers' is a different thing.

So, as great as Loki was in The Avengers, we won't be seeing him in the sequels, even if his brother will be joining up with the super group. It seems, with Ultron as the next villain, that we may be getting a different theme for the enemy of each movie; Loki represented the "God" aspect of the Marvel Universe, and Ultron will be show casing more of the scientific/engineering side of the series.

On that note, with such an unstoppable enemy in the form of Ultron on the horizon, it makes one wonder; will one of our heroes die in the fight to save the world? Well, according to Whedon, it's a possibility, but it doesn't seem likely.

Um... maybe? But I'd have to have a really good reason, a really great sequence for [Marvel executives] to go, 'We'll cut off a potential franchise, that's fine!' They know, as any good studio does, that without some stakes, some real danger, how involved can we get? We don't just rule it out across the board, but neither is the mission statement 'Who can we kill?' We try to build the story organically and go, 'How hard can we make it on these people?'

This makes a lot of sense, and I never thought about it in terms of the fact that they wouldn't just be ending the character's story, but also, most likely, the possibility of that character's franchise continuing (except for maybe through prequels and such). Is this something you'd like to see; a major character dying for the sake of the story?

Zack Snyder Clears The Air On The Destruction of Metropolis in ‘Man Of Steel’

One of the louder criticisms from this summers Man of Steel was the destruction of a large section downtown Metropolis in the third act (spoiler.) The damage that Superman and his nemesis, Zod, wreaked upon the fictional east coast city was massive, there is no arguing that. Back in June Buzzfeed enlisted some experts to tally up cost of the Kryptonian slap fight and they came up with a staggering $2 trillion Dollars including more than half a million Metropolites dead or presumed dead. Some have rationalized that most of the buildings appeared empty meaning the city was mostly evacuated. Zod did give a 24 hour heads up -surely many people made it out alive, right? Hundreds of thousands dead or missing was probably more like 10 s of thousands... right?

Wrong. Apparently the death toll was staggering, and Director Zack Snyder says that was part of the message in the movie. Talking with the Japan Times, Synder dropped this bomb:

"I wanted the movie to have a mythological feeling. In ancient mythology, mass deaths are used to symbolize disasters. In other countries like Greece and Japan, myths were recounted through the generations, partly to answer unanswerable questions about death and violence. In America, we don't have that legacy of ancient mythology. Superman (who first appeared in 'Action Comics' in 1938) is probably the closest we get. It's a way of recounting the myth."

To play devils advocated here, I think I can see where Snyder is going with this. There is no arguing that the final battle was epic in scope and while Superman seemed oblivious to the civilians below, we definitely see them on screen and since they are CGI we know they are there purpose. If his intention was to have this massive disaster be apart of his rebooting of the Superman myth, maybe that means we'll see the last son of Krypton dealing with the aftermath in the forthcoming sequel.

As a small addendum, I still feel that he could have had his massive explosion cake and ate it too with one simple scene. Superman fans wanted to see Superman be Superman, even in this newer, modernized, 'realistic,' iteration. All Snyder needed to do was have a scene where the big blue boy scout smacks Zod away (through a building even, since Zack seems to love that kinda stuff) to buy time to save a little girl from being crushed by a bus. My guess is that would have even turned Mark Waid back from hating this new Synderman version of the man of tomorrow.

Edgar Wright Chats a Bit about ‘Ant-Man’

Ant-man is one of those Marvel "phase 3" movies that many of us are eager to start hearing about, particularly with regards to story and cast. But, alas, we're all still waiting for "phase 2" to peter out, and until that's done we'll likely not hear much. Luckily, writer/director Edgar Wright had the good graces to at least talk a little about his upcoming Ant-Man. In a recent interview with Indiewire, he gave us some input on Ant-Man's place in the universe, the tone of the film and how it actually managed to survive the continual barrage of delays.

When asked about where the Ant-Man flick fits in to the rest of the official Disney-Marvel universe:

I think it's just doing its own thing in the accepted history but it's still part of the other movies and always was. In the time I've been working on it other things have happened in the other movies that could be affected in this. It is pretty standalone in the way we're linking it to the others. I like to make it standalone because I think the premise of it needs time. I want to put the crazy premise of it into a real world, which is why I think "Iron Man" really works because it's a relatively simple universe; it's relatable. I definitely want to go into finding a streamlined format where you use the origin format to introduce the main character and further adventures can bring other people into it. I'm a big believer in keeping it relatively simple and Marvel agrees on that front.

When asked about what the tone of the film is likely to be:

It's hard to say, my head's still in 'World's End.' I think it's funny...I wouldn't say it has any of the comedy that is in my previous but I think it'll be in a different vein. There'll be less swearing in it.

And finally, Wright addresses why he's still involved despite years of delays:

The reason it's always been there is because they really love the script and so I was very excited that they didn't say, "Let's give the script to someone else." I'm so glad that I made 'World's End' and it was the right time to do it and there were many reasons why we wanted to do it, had to do it and I'm very prod that I did it because if we didn't do it in the next couple years we'd have never done it.

Kevin Feige on ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ & Loki’s Future in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe

Easily one of the biggest "WOW" moments of this year's San Diego Comic Con was the official title announcement for The Avenger's sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron. And since then we've been told repeatedly they're only borrowing the title, not the Ultron storyline, from the comics. Which, I'll admit, is completely misleading, but if the success of Marvel's Phase 1 has proven anything it's have faith in Kevin Feige.

Empire caught up with Feige during the Con and asked him how Joss Whedon and he came to decide upon this title,

We came up with a few titles, but every month a new comic book appeared, and that's a great title. Age Of Ultron is a great title. We had a few other 'Of Ultrons', but that was the best one. So we're borrowing that title, but taking storylines from decades of Avengers storylines

I'm still confused, but if "Ultron" was always in the working title he must play a significant role, right? Otherwise, what the hell is "Ultron" referring to if not the robot created by Hank Pym, a.k.a. Ant-Man?

In other Marvel news, Feige also discussed the future of Loki Laufeyson in the franchise, saying, "We think Loki could be the big bad for us, for a long time." Early reports have said Loki won't appear in Age of Ultron - but good news Hiddlestoners! - Feige doesn't implicitly confirm or deny this. And really, after Tom Hiddleston's show-stopping appearance as Loki in Hall H last Saturday, why wouldn't you try and work this guy into every Marvel movie?

Hank Pym is Still ‘Ant-Man’, Ultron or no Ultron, Says Edgar Wright

I know what some of you are thinking: Why is it news that Marvel superhero Ant-Man is Hank Pym? That's common comic book knowledge, right?

Here's where the confusion comes in: When SDCC revealed that the second Avengers movie will be titled Avengers: Age of Ultron, many fans were perplexed. In the Marvel Comics universe, Ultron was created by Hank Pym-but in the Marvel Cinematic universe, Avengers: Age of Ultron chronologically precedes Ant-Man, which will introduce Hank Pym.

Is Marvel Studios putting the cart before the horse, then?

Avengers: Age of Ultron director and Nerd Demiurge Joss Whedon explained that the sequel will rewrite the canon origin of Ultron-Pym will no longer be his creator, and while the new origin has yet to be revealed, the smart money seems to be on Tony Stark as Ultron's alternate maker.

Soon after, Edgar Wright revealed to io9 that Ant-Man will indeed be Hank Pym....which is a bit more of an important revelation than one might think, as multiple characters in the Marvel universe have taken on the mantle of Ant-Man, and it would conceivably be possible to do a film without Pym.

Ant-Man is due in theaters November 6, 2015-while Avengers: Age of Ultron is scheduled for release several months sooner on May 1, 2015.

DC Exec Comes Up With Lame Excuse for No ‘Wonder Woman’ Movie

They couldn't make an Avengers movie without first doing Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, so keeping that in mind, it would make sense that they can't do a Justice League movie without first getting Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman to the big screen. Just one problem: try as they might, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros seem positively unable to get anything Wonder Woman greenlit, whether it's on the big or small screen.

Well, Warner Bros. brand manager for superheroes Diane Nelson has answer as to why no one, from Joel Silver to Joss Whedon to David E. Kelly to Allan Heinberg to Nicolas Winding Refn have succeeded to get Wonder Woman on screen in any form. As she told The Hollywood Reporter:

We have to get her right, we have to. She is such an icon for both genders and all ages and for people who love the original TV show and people who read the comics now. I think one of the biggest challenges at the company is getting that right on any size screen. The reasons why are probably pretty subjective: She doesn't have the single, clear, compelling story that everyone knows and recognizes. There are lots of facets to Wonder Woman, and I think the key is, how do you get the right facet for that right medium? What you do in TV has to be different than what you do in features. She has been, since I started, one of the top three priorities for DC and for Warner Bros. We are still trying right now, but she's tricky.

That sounds nice. Of course waiting to get it right didn't stop Catwoman, Green Lantern, Steel, Batman and Robin, Jonah Hex et al from getting made. I believe these were Joss Whedon's words when he left the project in 2007: "I would go back in a heartbeat if I believed that anybody believed in what I was doing. The lack of enthusiasm was overwhelming." I guess part of getting it right is to drum up at least a degree of enthusiasm.

Anyway, Nelson did have some ideas about what other DC characters we might see on the big screen soon:

Sandman is right on top. I think it could be as rich as the Harry Potter universe. Fables. Metal Men. Justice League. And yes, I'm going to say it: Aquaman.

Hm. Not sure I want to live in a world where we might see a Metal Men or Aquaman movie before a Wonder Woman.

‘Sandman: Overture’ Issue #1 Cover and Potential ‘Sandman’ Movie Rumors

Good news for fans of Neil Gaiman - The Sandman is back in the news. In addition to the coming of a new comic, The Sandman: Overture (the cover of which you can see above), it looks like there may be a little pull from DC to get Warner Bros. working on a movie adaptation of the original Sandman series. Check the rumormill highlights out below.

Apparently, DC President Diane Nelson, in a recent interview, said that one of the top DC titles on her list of "make these into movies" is Gaiman's The Sandman. It may seem like nothing that the prez of DC said that she wants to see Gaiman's work turned into a big screen flick, but she also happens to be the one at DC with the biggest pull when it comes to pushing Warner Bros. towards new projects.

Given that Warner Bros. already has enough on their plate with the Man of Steel success and their subsequent race to start competing seriously in the super hero movie wars, it could be some time before they get around to it, even if it is on their list. And we certainly don't want a repeat of the first attempt at a Sandman movie, in which the movie execs tried to alter the story by having Morpheus summoned into the world via a group of teenagers doing a ritual at a party. With the popularity of the comic and the rabid nature of fans these days, there would likely be a riot.

Those that want to check out The Sandman: Overture can expect to see it hitting shelves this fall. As for the movie... well, we'll just have to wait and see what happens. ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Update: Hugh Jackman to Go Full Monty?

While doing some press for his latest go around at portraying our favorite diminutive Canadian berserker with adamantium claws, Hugh Jackman sat down with Access Hollywood, which, quite naturally, lead to a discussion about the Wolverine's other big part in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Jackman gives glowing remembrances and complements to his cast-mates from the original X-Men movie as well as the newer X-Men: First Class cast.

Now from his tone and lightheartedness we can safely say that Jackman was just joking around, but don't worry, he's sure to at least have that shirt off during the movie. He's got to show off that fighting physique he's worked so hard to maintain during the filming of The Wolverine until now.

Who knows though, perhaps the time travel aspect of X-Men: Days of Future Past will also include a twist on the old Terminator method of time travel which doesn't allow clothing to travel through time. Not because of some serious super science, but mainly because all clothing comes back around into fashion if you wait long enough.

Joss Whedon’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Billboard

The countdown to Joss Whedon's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is quickly running down to the September premiere and we're starting to see a ramp up of marketing. Today's example is a billboard out in Hollywood, picture thanks to Entertainment Weekly. We should start seeing more and more as September approaches.

Neill Blomkamp to Fans – No ‘Star Wars’ or Super Heroes for Him

Neill Blomkamp, in his few short years in the industry, has managed to distinguish himself as a top-notch writer, director and visual effects artist. He's a particular favorite among science fiction fans, having turned out the acclaimed District 9 and the almost released Elysium. Naturally, being a guru in the sci-fi world means that his opportunities are growing, especially where it comes to getting a shot at some big-name (and big-dollar) productions. Blomkamp was even a fan favorite when it came to choosing the director for the new Star Wars flick. But despite the prestige that heading a Star Wars or super hero film could bring, Blomkamp has no desire to join the crowd.

In an interview with Collider, he had this to say:

...I just want to be an artist that's just left alone. That's really what I want. I want to make stuff that just...films are the only art form that require commerce so desperately. Any other artist needs a few dollars for a paint brush, really if you think about it, like musicians or authors. They can be as free as they want. This is the one thing that just needs copious amounts of money. If you imagine a filmmaker trying to just be left alone as much as possible and make Star Wars how does that work? Exactly, it kind of doesn't, but...

But, you may be asking yourself, wasn't Blomkamp attached to a Halo flick a while back? And isn't that a big-money number that would have had the dollars-and-cents overlords breathing down his neck the entire production? Well, he had something to say about that as well:

I cannot imagine the s-t that would've gone down if that production had actually been made. But Peter (Jackson) may have been able to shield me from it...possibly. The world of Halo and the mythology of Halo, though is still something that I find- it's like Star Wars, it's so appealing to me because it's cool and it's there and I can imagine it. But you have to do it in a way you can do it yourself.

It sounds like this guy will be sticking to his own creations, thank you very much, and that's fine by me. Why take a creative writing talent out of circulation just so you can attach him to some recycled material? Yeah, we might get an awesome Star Wars or super hero flick, but it's just as likely that all the oversight would kill it and lead to something less than what Blomkamp is capable of.

‘The Avengers’ Being Recruited to Help You Orgasm (NSFW!)

Well, it was only a matter of time before the leading super hero franchise ended up being turned into something dirty. In truth, I expected this sort of thing much earlier, though perhaps I'm only just discovering it. What the crap am I talking about, you ask? DC Comics And David Goyer Conjure A John Constantine TV Show At NBC

DC Comics has announced their third TV series this season (Gotham Central and The Flash being the other ones). Deadline reports NBC has picked up a Warner/DC adaptation of Constantine, based on the cynical British con-man and magician turned supernatural detective John Constantine, not to be confused with the Keanu Reeves portrayed by Keanu Reeves in 2005 s Constantine.

The show will be written and produced by David Goyer (co-writer of Man Of Steel and Nolan's Batman trilogy) and Daniel Cerone (producer of The Mentalist). As far as we know, the movie version of the character instrumental to Guillermo Del Toro's Dark Universe is still in development.

Constantine's contract stipulates there will be a penalty for NBC if they don't air the show. John Constantine knows what a shaft those contracts with penalties are.

Kneel Before Doom! (And Empty the Register)

I guess the eurozone crisis has hit Latveria particularly hard since Doctor Doom has apparently resorted to knocking over convenience stores to pay the bills.

If you're in the Richmond, VA area, be on the look out for the dictator, who, with one of his associates, knocked over a grocery store in the 3000 block of Stony Point Road on Friday night. Doctor Doom walked into the store around 11 pm, having traded in his customary suit of armor and green tunic and cape for a green hoodie and some runners, and ordered the cashier at gunpoint top open the cash register. Doom and a man wearing a orange and brown with a skull and bones design and a nondescript black mask ran off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No magic? No Doombots? No death rays? Wow, Doom's really come down in the world. Citizens with any information on the current whereabouts of Doom and his cohort are asked to police, or call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000. You can also text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word "ITip" followed by your tip. Obviously, the Richmond police would appreciate it if those tips didn't come from your comic collection.

New ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ TV Promos & Will Loki Make an Appearance?

Joss Whedon's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is in the home stretch before the series September 24th premiere and we're starting to get that last burst of marketing to amp up interest in the new show. This time around, we've got two new television promos with Clark Gregg introducing himself and the new agent characters that make up his team that's not a team, watch the second promo below and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The other thing many fans are clamoring to know is what characters from the movie universe might be making appearances on the new TV series. Tom Hiddleston, who plays a magnificent Loki in The Avengers and Thor movies (and soon Thor 2, for which there's a new kick ass trailer!) was recently asked if he was open to appearing on the small screen.

It would be something that would depend upon script and story but yeah, of course, I've spoken to him (Whedon) about it. I saw him down in San Diego. I hear it's good fun.

Sounds like Loki is willing and able to make some mischief for those new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and we can only hope it doesn't take more than one season to bring him in. We already have another one of The Avengers alum Cobie Smulders (Agent Maria Hill) making an appearance in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot. As for some of the other big names we'd love to see make an appearance: Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson... we'll just have to hope and wait. You can be sure that the question will come up whenever those actors get interviewed, especially if the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. show takes off like we all expect it to.

Viral Site for Trask Industries is Live! Learn All About Bolivar Trask & The Sentinels From ‘Days of Future Past’

While in one Marvel movie franchise there's debate over who'll be Ultron's creator, there's no question who creates the Sentinels for FOX's X-Men: Days of Future Past: Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage). And with the newly created site for Trask Industries, www.trask-industries.com, you can learn all about him and his genetic/security company's mission. The viral site is likely only the beginning of what I'm sure will be an onslaught of Days of Future Past marketing leading up to the film's release on May 23rd, 2014.

Perusing the site you can learn of the latest innovations in Sentinel technology, check out their specs, and how they're used to contain mutants. You can also browse Trask Industries' work with genetics and controlling the mutant gene. So we'll see the Sentinels beginnings in the past, but also their full deadly potential in the future. Does this also date the future timeline as occurring around 2020? Looks like it, with the past's timeline set around 1973.
