Ragnarok Online: Sohee (and a side rant)

I've been seeing a couple of blogs taking my articles... without giving me credit..! It's made me a little upset... even though the pictures are not all mine (the picture of Zagato was taken by me), all the writings in this blog were done by me, and I give credit to the people who cosplay as well as the photographers...

I wish people who post my articles on their site would give me credit too. Otherwise, plagiarism is still stealing...

ragnarok online cosplay - sohee

Anyway... Enough ranting! I went to Flickr to search for some cosplay photos and found something recent... Comiket 72 was held in Tokyo Big Sight last 17th to 19th of August this year. A particular album by a-mole caught my eye with its fabulous gallery of cosplays! This one I love, because Ragnarok Online is a pioneer MMORPG game!

Sohee is actually a monster in Ragnarok which, if you're lucky, you can capture as a pet! I haven't played Ragnarok Online before, so I'm not entirely sure about what a Sohee is and what it can do... I do know, however, that this cosplay is really done well!

Here is a short description of what a Sohee is from Wickedly Cute:

A sohee is a monster that can be found on level four and five of the Payon Caves. According to Ragnarok the Animation the Sohee (along with Bonguns and Munaks) were once people of old Payon City and the reason for their aggression is that the Moonlight Flower disturbs their souls and will not let them rest. With a Silver Knife of Chastity you can tame and hatch a Sohee egg for your own cute-pet demon virgin.

Thanks for sharing us your gallery, a-mole! I'll post other pictures I like from him soon. Make sure you check out his gallery when you have the time!

Robby Reed's DIAL B FOR BLOG is Back!

Yes, you read that right, DIAL B FOR BLOG is Back! Now a lot of people are gonna be real excited about this news. Back in the day, DIAL B FOR BLOG was a really fun website. It covered silver age comic book history like no other. It had style, substance, & was very well designed. But then one day the owner/creator decided to quit. It was discovered that he had a set goal to reach a certain number of posts & then quit. So, after hitting that number, he did. The site was left up for people to enjoy but it was never updated for a really long time. Well I got an email from him & he said he's bringing it back. No way! I didn't believe him. That is, until I went to go check it out for myself and yes, DIAL B FOR BLOG is Back! Do you too also think it's too good to be true? Well, Just CLICK HERE!

Vocaloid 3: SeeU

vocaloid 3 cosplay - seeu

The first Vocaloid capable of singing in both Japanese and Korean, SeeU's voice was provided by artist Kim Dahi of the K-pop girl band "Glam". Her voice is light-hearted, but considered to be quite difficult to use compared to her predecessors. She made her first appearance on the 30th of August 2011, but her official release was not until the 21st of October 2011.

Cute cosplay of a brand new Vocaloid! Unfortunately, the character design reminds me too much of Miku. But maybe that's just me?

By the way, I just got back from Hong Kong, so expect some late posts among other things going wrong in Cosplay Holic for the next few days! I apologize in advance for the trouble! Thank you so much for your patience!

Cosplay Camp (and a Little Sword Tutorial)

Oh No! Manga Cosplay Camp 2012 will be starting in a few hours, and I've managed to create a cosplay prop sword from my premier series, "Karma"!

I encourage everyone to attend as I will also be taking pictures of the cosplayers attending to be featured on Cosplay Holic. But of course, not everyone is from the Philippines, so I decided that I should add the sword tutorial for this post as well.

It's not a formal tutorial, but you can find my work in progress posts in my blog:

  • Initial skeleton and strengthening
  • Blade finishing
  • Hilt: the cross guard, hand guard, and pommel
  • Design detailing
  • Painting
  • Final Result

A formal tutorial should be posted in a few days. For now, I'll leave you guys with this, and if you have any questions, you can post a comment here or in each of my blog posts for anything specific.

See you at Cosplay Camp! ( -*)

Where Did Cosplay Orginated ?

(Wanna meet Nobuyuki Takahash, the man who coined the term cosplay ? Go to 1:50 )

Well, that depends. Do you mean the term cosplay or the act of cosplay ?

Cosplay in term of dressing as a known character probably has been done forever. Perhaps early cavemen made fun of a certain other caveman by imitating his walk or action. We all remember in school how maybe one nutty teacher would dress up as Abraham Lincoln or other historical figure to illustrate a point. Costuming or dressing up as someone goes back ages.
If you mean cosplay in a convention environment, well perhaps it can be pointed in modern times to WorldCon in New York City. It was 1939 and the first World Science Fiction Convention had an attendance of 200 people. Among them was Forrest J Ackerman dressed in a "futuristicostume" - a hint of today's costuming.
More after the jump.

As sci-fi become more popular, more and more cons start popping up around the country. When Star Trek came out, cons specifically geared toward that series sprung up. Some fans would make costumes of their favorite characters. Just take a look at this Star Trek con back in New York of 1973.

So dressing up and sci-fi cons wasn't that unusual. Sci-fi cons usually ran for a weekend. There would be a dealer room, industry guests, panels, opening ceremonies, art shows, masquerades (costume contest). Anime cons for the most part here in the United States were a offspring from the traditional sci-fi cons. I don't know what the first anime-specific con was but I know the oldest would be A-kon started in 1990 in Dallas, TX.
Oh, the term itself ? Nobuyuki Takahashi coined the term when he attended WorldCon in 1984. The documentary "Almost Famous" there's a segment (1:50 segment) where he talks about how he came up with the term. As it grew in popularity in Asia, and with the spread of the internet, the terminology came back to the United States. So yes, cosplay, the term is Japanese but costuming in general, well, we humans been doing that already for a long time.
In 2008 if you asked me what cosplay was, I would definitely say it was from Japanese anime/video games but ask me today and I would respond with the source material would be anything in pop culture - movies, tv, comics, anime, games, tv commercials, singers among others.
I went to my first con in the 1990s but my awareness of cosplay actually came from the internet. I would say the first con I went to with cosplay would be Anime Expo in 2008.
So how did you discover cosplay ?

Youmacon 2012 !

Are you going to Youmacon ? Me too ! I managed to find an inexpensive flight out of Los Angeles for $131 each way. BOO-YAH ! That's a pretty good deal if I say so myself. So this is my last big con of the year and what's best is this is a con on my bucket list ! I've been meaning to go to Youmacon for a few years now and so this is my opportunity.

Youmacon is a pretty new convention relatively speaking. It started in 2005 and managed to gain attendance quickly over the years - last count it was over 10,000. Based in Detroit, MI and is one of the three biggest anime cons in the Midwest (the others are Anime Central and Ohayocon).

Now, since I can not get an artist alley table at such a short notice and I know there's many of y'all who are interested in purchasing the book, I came up with an alternative plan. Buy the book for $40 right now and I will bring your copy personally to you at Youmacon and signed it there. And give hugs. And stickers. Mostly hugs. And smiles.

So get a clicking ! Oh, by your way, make sure you put your cell phone number as well as name (if your parent is buying the book) in the notes section before checking out. I am only bringing enough copies to those who pay. I will *not* be selling any books at the con.  It's against the regulations and plus, I don't want to carry any more than I have to - imagine dragging all these books through the airport !

One more thing. It'll ask for your zip code but don't worry, shipping is zero out.

Where to find me ???

Thurs : Arrive that night ...like midnight. Yeah, that is why the fare was $131. Friday : Cosplaying as Brief (Panty & Stocking). Walk around, check out the con, take photos, do video interviews.Sat.  : Normal clothes, taking photos / video of cosplayers. I'll be out and around.

Sun. : I may be around but it will be later during the day. I may have another job while in town so there's a chance I may not even be at the con that day.

Mon : Early, early morning fly back to L.A. Yeah, that is why the fare was $131.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at Detroit !

*dance a jig*
