Sources Say: New X-Box in the New Year!

Hot on the heels of the recently released Wii U, Nintendo’s next generation console gaming platform, comes news that the next iteration of X-Box is on its way in the next year, according to Bloomberg News.

Sources inside, or close to, Microsoft are saying that the company is looking to a potential release date of next Thanksgiving (American, not Canadian) in order to take maximum advantage of the holiday sales period. The company is also debating right now the best way to unveil the new system, the choice being a big reveal at an industry event like E3 or a dedicated event organized by Microsoft. An official statement from Microsoft was not made when asked about the rumor.

Wii U was released a few weeks ago and sold more than 400,000 units in its first seven days of release, while the original Wii sold another 300,000 over the busy Thanksgiving week sales period. But X-Box 360 remains the industry leader, selling 750,000 units over the same period allowing Microsoft to remain the best-seller for 22 straight months.

Still no world yet on a release date for the next generation of Playstation. {tumbleweed}

More news will appear here as it develops.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Director James Gunn Apologizes for Offensive Blog Post

In a move I’m sure everyone at Disney and Marvel are hoping will quell the lynch mob gunning for Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, the director has issued an apology through GLAAD. Earlier this week the internet erupted in outrage over misogynistic and homophobic comments Gunn made on his blog almost two years ago that offended many, myself included, and alarmed all. If you’re not aware of the details I suggest you check out our own Jason Tabrys’ fair and balanced (Can I even use that phrase? Has it already been corrupted and copyrighted?) take on the whole ordeal.

Gunn’s statement can be read, in full, below,

A couple of years ago I wrote a blog that was meant to be satirical and funny. In rereading it over the past day I don't think it's funny. The attempted humor in the blog does not represent my actual feelings. However, I can see where statements were poorly worded and offensive to many. I'm sorry and regret making them at all.

People who are familiar with me as evidenced by my Facebook page and other mediums know that I'm an outspoken proponent for the rights of the gay and lesbian community, women and anyone who feels disenfranchised, and it kills me that some other outsider like myself, despite his or her gender or sexuality, might feel hurt or attacked by something I said. We're all in the same camp, and I want to do my best to make this world a better place for all of us. I'm learning all the time. I promise to be more careful with my words in the future. And I will do my best to be funnier as well. Much love to all.

While I wasn’t going to sign a petition to get him kicked off Guardians, I felt confidant Disney would see to this situation. You know this apology happened because some executive in a suit pointed at Gunn and said, “You. Fix this.” But at the same time, I like to be optimistic and think the best of people and I do believe this is a heartfelt apology. This whole debacle only goes to prove you need to be careful with what write on the internet, or publish publicly anywhere. You’ll be held accountable one day and what you thought were harmless, funny jokes turn out be remarks you didn’t consider could be offensive to others. Stop and think, people.

At the same time, these comments Gunn made do reveal an ugliness maybe even Gunn himself didn’t suspect he had. And I can only hope that by the public’s refusal to laugh off these situations and ignore them, we all become more aware of the hateful things that can be said when you’re trying to be a comedian.

Triforce Holiday [T-Shirt]

Here’s the t-shirt Link’s grandma got for him Christmas last year. He hoped she’d forget about it, but no, just last week she asked if he’d be wearing it again this year. He’ll look just wonderful in this Triforce version of the ugly Christmas sweater, and so will you.

My Little Pony Costumes Are Way Too Fun [Cosplay]

You may not love My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic or understand the pony craze, but you have to admit that the human interpretations of pony costumes are fun! They’re colorful, snazzy, and make me think of 80s attire. Cosplayers go for everything from full pony suits to tutus to embroidered gym shirts. I love seeing the variety.

See a few more costumes after the break.

First Stewart & McKellen, Now Jackman Circling ‘Days of Future Past’?

They say that Wolverine is the best at what he does, and it seems that what Hugh Jackman is best at is playing Wolverine.

Jackman, who is currently in the midst of some awards consideration for his portrayal of the persecuted Jean Valjean in the upcoming screen adaptation of the long-running stage musical Les Miserables, is in talks with the producers of X-Men: Days of Future Past to reprise the popular role of the feral mutant Wolverine in the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

As previously announced this week, both Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen have joined the cast of Bryan Singer’s latest X-Men opus. The accomplished thespians, who appeared as Professor X and Magneto respectively in the first three X-Men movies, will join stars of the recent prequel X-Men: First Class - James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult – in the new X-Men film. The film, which is based on the classic X-Men comic book story of the same name, will combine casts and characters across many, various X-films covering the past, present and future of Marvel’s Merry Mutants.

Of course, Jackman hasn’t strayed too far from Wolverine, who he first played in X-Men in 2000, which was followed by X2 in 2003, and X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006. Jackman appeared in the solo adventure X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, and cameoed last year in First Class in a scene with McAvoy and Fassbender. Jackman recently wrapped up the sequel The Wolverine, his second solo film as the character, which is due for release next summer.

Now naturally, getting Jackman to appear in any X-Men project is a no-brainer, but Wolverine plays a pretty significant part in the comic book story. The question is, will he have an equally compelling part in this movie? And does this bode well for a coming announcement that Ellen Page will appear in the film as Kitty Pride? I think this project gets more and more interesting, I just hope that they don’t show all their cards before the film’s release and save at least a couple of surprises.

X-Men: Days of Future Past will be in theaters everywhere on July 18, 2014.

When Heroes and Deadly Traps Collide You Get The New Trailer for ‘All Superheroes Must Die’

Fans of the Saw series know the scenario well: a group of regular individuals fighting to survive the deadly traps of a madman. It’s paid off quite well for Lions Gate Entertainment‘s last seven films, but what happens when the madman & his traps are being used against super powered heroes?

That’s the premise for All Superheroes Must Die, the latest film from Image Entertainment and Jason Trost, the co-writer/director and star of the independent hit The FP..

When four super heroes awake in an abandoned town, they find themselves at the mercy of their abductor and Arch Nemesis, Rickshaw, played by Dexter‘s James Remar. Stripped of their powers, the heroes — including Trost and X-Men: First ClassLucas Till – must compete in a series of deadly challenges in a race against the clock to not only save the lives of the innocent civilians, but also their own.

Take a look at the trailer, from back when it was still called “VS”, after the jump.

Being able to get Remar and Till on the cast for a film shot with a budget of less then a million dollars shows that at least some people think this film has what it take to be a hit, myself included. Hopefully audiences will see it that way too when All Superheroes Must Die is released in video on demand Jan. 1st, 2013, with a limited theatrical release a few days later on Jan. 4th.

Snyder Talks Superman’s Costume, Doesn’t Rule Out ‘Justice League’ Connection

Many have wondered if Man of Steel, the new Superman film directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan, might the beginning of studio Warner Bros. building a similar cinematic universe for DC Comics characters that Marvel has for their films, all leading to a potential Justice League movie.

Snyder and Co. have been pretty mum on the implications, but in a new interview with the The New York Post (via Comic Book Movie) Snyder says that there’s nothing to suppose that Man of Steel couldn’t kick off a shared movie universe leading to Justice League.

“I don't know how 'Justice League' is going to be handled. Honestly, I don't. But 'The Man of Steel' exists, and Superman is in it. I don't know how you'd move forward without acknowledging that.”

On the flip side, Snyder says that the approach he and Nolan took was to focus on this film, and not worry about the implications of sequels and spin-offs.

"We approach the film as a single endeavor. There are a lot of gears that have to turn in the world of commerce and the world of the mythology we create to facilitate more adventures for this character. We'll see what happens."

And because no superhero movie interview is complete without addressing some bit of minutia that only nerds seem to invest an exorbitant amount of time and energy in, Snyder talked about Superman’s new threads (via Geek Tyrant):

“The costume was a big deal for me, and we played around for a long time. I tried like crazy to keep the red briefs on him. Everyone else said, 'You can’t have the briefs on him.’ I looked at probably 1,500 versions of the costumes with the briefs on. If you look at the costume, it’s very modern, but the relationship to the original costume is strong. You come onto a project like this, and you hear about modernization and you hear about bringing things forward to today, and all you can do is hope that it’s going to look cool and different from anything you’ve seen before.”

Man of Steel comes out in theaters everywhere next summer.

‘Sherlock’ Series 3 Pushed Back as far as 2014!?

Can’t say I didn’t see this coming, but it doesn’t make the news any easier to endure. Due to the exploding careers of its stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, Sherlock won’t be returning any earlier than late 2013, or likely early 2014 for those in the U.S. awaiting PBS’ broadcast.

BBC‘s hit series based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s brilliant detective was schedule to begin shooting its third series this coming January, with hopes for a Fall 2013 premiere, but filming has been pushed back to March. It seems Cumberbatch – who can been seen in next year’s Star Trek Into Darkness and heard in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – is expected to begin shooting director Bill Condon's untitled WikiLeaks project soon, and Freeman is expected to be needed for more filming to finish up Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit now that it’s a trilogy, cause y’know, he’s the hobbit.

Add to this how busy series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss already are, what with that little anniversary happening next year for that silly science fiction, and you can see why Sherlock is being put on the back burner. And after the cliffhanger at the end of Series 2 those few more months of waiting will be a struggle. How will fans cope? Well, there’s always Tumblr. Especially the Johnlock tag.

Dream Station JOL – A Girl’s Paradise in Harajuku

After WCS we visited several places in Tokyo and will be reporting on them shortly. I went to JOL in Harajuku with my translator Anna and we were lucky enough to be shown around by the staff there. We found out how recently Harajuku has changed from our sterotypical image of the area. Read on to find out more!

Immortalised in Gwen Stephanie's 2004 song "Harajuku Girls", for many the Harajuku area of Tokyo epitomises the colourful street fashion which Tokyo is famous for. However times have changed, and although many Lolita and alternative brands still have their flagship stores in Harajuku, current visitors to the area may be surprised to see more tourists than goths hanging out there on weekends.

It seems Harajuku's alternative fashion scene peaked about five years ago, and the face of the area has been gradually changing eversince. Does this mean that Harajuku is no longer the place to go for the latest trends in Tokyo? In fact, the opposite! We visited Dream Station JOL, one place where youth culture is well and truly booming.

A popular after-school hang out for teens, JOL stands for "Joy of Life" and is located on Harajuku's famous shopping street, Takeshita-dori. One of five stores located across the country, Dream Station JOL is a mini mall housing everything from clothing brands to food outlets – and even the JOL Studio - a place where girls can change clothes after school and try out the latest make-up products and hair straighteners.

So if punk rock fashion is gradually going out of style with Tokyo teens, what's replacing it? According to JOL Harajuku staff, Koichi Ogawa, Harajuku is becoming more like Akihabara. Harajuku's unique teen culture has a new focus, based around a love for idol groups and anime. Usually associated with anime characters, the latest "hot" fashion accessory is cat ears, while the popularity of idol groups like AKB48 has seen a revival of school uniform (seifuku) fashion. Many school students choose to change into a more fashionable version of their school uniform after school or on weekends, and Harajuku teens are no exception. Phantasian store in JOL sells a range of affordable uniforms similar to the "western" style sported by AKB and other groups.

"The most popular stores here are WE GO, which sells affordable street fashion, and Repipi Armano which stocks more girly styles", says JOL Harajuku’s manager, Mika Ando. Accessories are available at Pink Latte (famous for its themed store, decorated in the style of a large pink aeroplane) and US brand Claire's. It seems the Harajuku punk style still has some influence, with "creepy cute" accessories such as hair clips with eyeballs on being as popular as ever. Even Claire's stocks a range of gothic and fairy-kei style accessories which are exclusive to their Harajuku store. Other popular brands are Dollywink eyelashes and Korean footwear Bubbleflop – flip flops emblazoned with bubbles, plastic sweets, dolphins and other decorations.

Unsurprisingly, character goods are as popular as ever and Harajuku has its own take on classic characters. Vintage character Monchichi has seen a recent revival, with JOL selling original versions of the little monkey designed by their customers. Another popular character is Mameshiba (a cross between a small dog and a talking bean), with JOL carrying a new pink version in the style of Harajuku celebrity Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Upstairs, JOL has a stage where they host regular shows and talent competitions. When we arrived, local idol group AmoYamo were performing their new single and they seemed to have a lot of fans! It's no surprise that local singers are becoming more popular after the success of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (Kyary was spotted by local fashion magazines in Harajuku before going on to launch her own singing career). Here's yet another example of Akihabara's influence in Harajuku - once upon a time, wannabe idols would perform on the streets of Akihabara, hoping to attract fans. Nowadays JOL gives teens a platform to perform in a safe environment, on a real stage in front of their peers.

Behind the audience area lies a range of food and drink stands - so teenagers can relax with a hot curry or cool bubble tea while checking out the latest acts. We tried a kind of giant takoyaki (fried octopus ball), except the octopus had been replaced with cheese, shrimp and other ingredients - it was delicious!

The best thing about JOL is that it's much more than just a consumer experience - they have a very active local and online community. There are over 20,000 registered JOL members across Japan, who can sign up to review products or model for the JOL magazine, which is given out free at stores across the country. JOL Harajuku even runs a monthly in-store meet-up for members where they can talk about problems at home, get careers advice and give their opinion on the latest fashions and trends. All the food and drink at these meetings is provided free of charge by the store, which shows how much they value their young customers.

If you are visiting Japan and would like to witness the blossoming of new trends, or if you're a young person who would like to experience Japanese youth culture first hand, we recommend checking out what Joy Of Life is all about.

Visit the Harajuku store at Dream Station JOL, Takeshita-Dori, Tokyo, Japan
(nearest station is Harajuku or Meiji Jingu-Mae)

Have Any Past Doctors Been Asked Back for ‘Doctor Who’ 50th? Colin Baker Says…

What’s Colin Baker, the sixth man to have played The Doctor on Doctor Who, up to lately? Well, at the moment he’s been carted off to a jungle island near Australia as he’s appearing on the upcoming season of ITV’s I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, airing tonight. It’s a sure change from the TARDIS, but thankfully the wardrobe is a bit of an improvement. Before Baker shipped off though, Digital Spy grabbed him for a short interview where, of course, discussion of Who‘s 50th Anniversary came up. Has he been asked to return for the special?

No. As far I know, neither of any of my erstwhile colleagues have been asked either.

Bummer. Well, how about the long rumored Doctor Who movie?

I haven't been approached to do a Doctor Who movie. I think they would be scraping the bottom of the barrel if they asked me to do it. All you have to do is hold up a picture of what I look right now and what I look like then and you'd know why.

Baker makes a point here about a big, logistical problem for the possibility of a multi-Doctor storyline to celebrate the golden anniversary: most of the past Doctors just don’t look like they did 20, 30, some 40 years ago. This hasn’t stopped them from reprising their roles in Big Finish’s successful line of Classic Who audio dramas, but television is an unforgiving medium. I still think it’d be neat to involve those actors in other roles, not as past incarnations of The Doctor. I’m sure someone involved could come up with a clever way around a multi-Doctor story that wasn’t actually about multiple Doctors.

Anyway, when asked about a possible cameo, Baker said,

A what? What's a cameo role, darling? Does that mean a small part? Urgh! I suppose I might. I don't know. I find it a bad idea to say what would you do if you were asked, which is why I'm going to say no, I probably wouldn't appear in any movie. They would have to persuade me.

See, clever people working on Doctor Who, if you’re clever enough maybe you could persuade Baker to return.

While Baker make see his involvement with Doctor Who as a thing of the past, it’s good to hear he’s a fan of what’s happening now,

And I absolutely love Matt Smith. When I heard another young [guy] was going to be playing the Doctor, I thought, 'Hmmm... Not another young one. Why don't they have an old geezer again, like me?' Suddenly, along comes this 29 or 28-year-old guy playing a 300-year-old Doctor - and he's brilliant. He encompasses all of the previous doctors and adds a bit himself.

Oops, I think mean something like 1200 year old, but we’ll let it slide. How important to you is having past Doctors involved in the 50th Anniversary?

Combining all Released Footage From ‘The Hobbit’ This Trailer is Over 7 Minutes Long!

We’ve seen teasers. We’ve seen trailers. We’ve even seen a few clips, but now thanks to YouTuber joatmonjb you can watch all available footage from The Hobbit in one neat, wonderfully edited, super trailer. Clocking in at seven minutes, 37 seconds the trailer includes footage from: Announcement trailer, Announcement trailer (G), Trailer 1, TV Spot 1 – 7, UK 1 minute TV spot, and Japanese 1 minute TV Spot.

It’s also noted,

Shots and sequences have been re-ordered into the possible running order of the final film. The audio can be choppy in places as original trailer background music overlaps much of the dialogue.

Still, it’s an achievement. A work only a true fan could muster. Give it a watch and let us know what you think!

Ang Lee Says Bygones RE: His 2003 ‘Hulk’ Movie

So yeah, I know (nearly) everyone out there hated the 2003 movie version of Hulk directed by Ang Lee. I didn’t, but it’s more or less universally-acclaimed that it was terrible. Regardless, Ang Lee broached the subject recently in an interview with Vulture about his latest movie, Life of Pi.

The ambitious project, based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel, involves a lot of visual effects work and CG, especially considering that the main characters include a tiger, a zebra, a hyena and an orangutan. According to Lee, his work on Hulk gave him the ground work and practical experience he need to make Pi. He also talked about his reaction to Mark Ruffalo‘s Hulk performance in this past summer’s The Avengers, as well as a, uh, reconsideration of the work he did with the character almost 10 years ago.

I learned quite a bit about CG from The Hulk, and I wouldn’t have been able to do Life of Pi without that. But it’s easier to create an animal, because there exists a good reference - so a tiger or a hyena is easier than a 2,000-pound rage monster. The hardest thing to do is the weight, not the skin, because there’s no reference for something that size that is agile. And the technology’s improved, so you can have more details with Mark’s Hulk. My problem is that I took the whole thing too seriously. I should have had more fun with it, instead of all the psychodrama! [Laughs.]

So there! Let’s let bygones be bygones now that Ang Lee’s admitted that he dropped the ball on Hulk. You can now go back to your Michael Bay bashing, which is undoubtedly already in progress.

‘Hitman: Absolution’ — The Review

Hitman: Absolution is the best argument ever made for video games to avoid storytelling altogether.

As a game, it’s often amazing, worth every minute of the six year wait and balancing the demands of modern gaming against the series’ traditional gameplay in often very clever ways.

As a story, it makes the movie look like Citizen Kane.

Let’s start with the game. There are twenty missions (!) in this game, all of them pretty meaty in their own way, although some are shorter and simpler than others. In some ways, there’s more variety here than there has ever been in the franchise, both in your mission objectives and how you can complete them. The level design is at once more sensible and less obvious: Just figuring out a kill, forget pulling Silent Assassin, in later missions will drive you pleasurably crazy.

That’s not even getting into the challenges, most of which consist of a photo and a cryptic hint about what to do and… that’s it. Even on Normal difficulty, it can be maddening.

It’s interesting to compare this to Blood Money in that way because the intervening six years have been kind and made IO Interactive bitter at the same time. Remember the standard load out in the last game? Gone here. You don’t have any syringes, any remote mines, just a fiber wire, perhaps your Silverballer, and what’s lying around. You’re going to have to get the lay of the land and improvise much more.

Of course, “what’s lying around” is pretty much anything that’s not nailed down, ranging from sniper rifles and remote explosives to pretty much anything that can be used to murder somebody. 47 is practically the Miles Davis of butchering mooks. And it’s gloriously fun.

Speaking of mooks, the AI has improved in some ways: You will no longer get shot for the crime of walking into a nightclub without a chicken costume on. It is a bit dumb in others; wait long enough and NPCs will settle back into their routines, even with a coworker dead in front of them. It’s still challenging, but it reinforces that you are playing a game, that you’re outwitting a computer, not a person.

Much of the game has been tweaked for the better: Disguises are much more crucial now, for example. If you’re dressed as an officer, police officers are more likely to spot you and blow your cover, so finding the right disguise, especially a rare disguise, can be crucial to some missions. Shooting is much improved, but not the best option. The cover system actually makes sense and is very, very useful for sneaking.

The Instinct system is also a nice touch. First of all, it’s not entirely necessary: You can get through most levels without it. Secondly, it’s a meter that depletes, and is also tied to, for example, the slow-mo system you can also use. It forces you to use that asset strategically and carefully.

In short, everything that the game could improve, as a game, IO Interactive went in and did. As a game, it is great.

Unfortunately, as a story it’s terrible. I don’t want to offer spoilers, since they’ll give away missions, but really, the only thing that saves the game story-wise is the incredibly dry sense of humor on display, which often manifests itself in the details and the NPC chatter. Sit on the edge of crowds: It’s a hoot to overhear cell phone conversations and snatches of what people are muttering about.

The main plot, however, is… well, it’s just so stupid that it turns into self-parody. This game is supposed to humanize Agent 47, but he’s a mass murderer who perpetually scowls and enjoys killing people. The only thing you think when faced with the girl the game centers around is “This guy is about the last person who should be a father figure”. The plot returns to the ridiculous cloning nonsense the games have never quite summarily dumped as the bad idea it is. It’s especially frustrating because they’ve got a great voice cast cleaning up some awful cut scenes: Powers Boothe and Keith Carradine stand out in particular.

Is this a dealbreaker? Not particularly. It just means you’ll be jamming the “skip cutscene” button a lot. The simple fact of the matter is that while the story is irrelevant, with the franchise, it has always been irrelevant. It’s the game we show up for, not the story it tells.

In the end, this is Hitman to its bones. If you like solving puzzles and shooting people, and sometimes solving puzzles BY shooting people, this is worth every penny.

Pull List: Comics Coming Out 11/21/12

What will we have to be thankful for in the comics department today? Quite a lot, actually.

  • DC has the 52 Omnibus and a collection of Batman/Judge Dredd crossovers, which are actually pretty hard to find, so this hardcover is quite welcome.
  • Marvel launches Indestructible Hulk and Captain America, as well as wrapping up the surprisingly entertaining crossover Minimum Carnage. It’s a good day to be a Mark Waid or a Rick Remender fan.
  • Image launches Clone, about a man who discovers he is one and that all of his fellow clones are after his pregnant wife, and the miniseries Comeback, which is basically Freejack in reverse; people pulled out of time at the last second to save them. There’s also more Revival and a new Walking Dead trade.
  • Dark Horse has a new Baltimore one-shot and launches Number 13, a story about an amnesiac child with lasers, with a zero issue.
  • IDW wraps up their latest Rocketeer miniseries, and launches the mini Adventures of Augusta Wind, an all-ages fantasy by J.M DeMatteis that reads a lot like “Alice on Infinite Earths”, launches their new Judge Dredd ongoing, and finally has a second issue of Frankenstein: Alive, Alive!
  • And Boom! has more Bravest Warriors and launches Supurbia as an ongoing.

As always, the full list is under the cut: Let us know what you’re picking up, and let’s talk some comics.
