Get a Costco sized grain of salt ready for this Star Wars: Episode VII rumor, Reuters has posted an article titled ‘Maya apocalypse and Star Wars collide in Guatemalan temple‘, in what I assume is the almost 200 year old trusted news sources first attempt at SEO link baiting.
Remember the temple from Episode IV on the planet Yavin 4? Well its real and its in Guatemala. With this Fridays Mayan scheduled apocalypse looming, Reuters is on had to awkwardly mash Star Wars and the end of the Maya Long Count calendar together.
“If it is the end of the world, hopefully Luke will come and blow up that Death Star,” said Alex Markovitz, a 24-year-old consultant and Star Wars fan from Philadelphia, looking out over the site of Skywalker’s rebel base. “I see why they shot here. It doesn’t look real. It looks like an alien planet.”
“Something big is going to happen,” said the president of Guatemala’s Star Wars fan club, entrepreneur Ricardo Alejos. “The Maya were an incredibly precise people. Something big is going to happen and we’ll find out what in a few days.”
I don’t know about you, but for my piece of mind I always check in with the local Star Wars fan club president for information about the end of the world. Now, they don’t just talk about the apocalypse, they also float out a baseless rumor about the Star Wars sequels plot.
“Yavin 4 and the rebel base return to the Star Wars plot in the forthcoming Episode VII, announced in October by the Walt Disney Co, in which Skywalker comes back to the planet to build a Jedi Knight academy. However, fans said that Disney will likely film those scenes in a studio rather than return to Tikal.”
So…. where are they getting this from exactly? Just fans on hand? Did a tour guide mention this? Some petroglyphs perhaps? The writer really just drops that little slice of information in there without batting an eye or citing any kind of source. Come on man, this is the internet, be responsible!
While it seems possible, hell even favorable, I’d say we hold off till something more official floats out onto the internet. That goes for both for a new Jedi temple on Yavin 4 and the end of the world.
