The Comic You Should Be Reading This Week: ‘Red Team’ #1

There were a lot of great books this week: Great Pacific had its fourth, twisty issue and we’ll have an interview with Joe Harris about the book later today; the first issue of Snapshot sets up what looks to be something a lot more complicated (and troubling) than its initial premise would indicate; Green Arrow #17 gives that book a fresh start. All of these are highly recommended.

Red Team is the best this week, though, because it does something we never thought it would do: Namely, restore some faith in Garth Ennis.

Ennis has written several classic books: Preacher, Hitman, and his work on the Max version of The Punisher all spring to mind.

But with a lot of his more recent work, Ennis has trended towards self-parody. In Preacher, the gore and gross situations worked in the context of the book, especially since there was a larger point to it. In books like, say, Ninjettes or The Boys, the sex and violence tended to be for its own sake, or for shock value, and it just got tiresome. When you can peg everything that you’ll find in a book not because of the concept or the plot, but because of the name on the cover, that’s a problem.

Red Team, however, is defined by its restraint. The book itself is serious: The plot follows four police officers who’ve finally had enough of a local criminal mastermind, and go to the other side of the law, murdering him in cold blood. There’s no people obsessed with fetish porn, no weirdly scarred horrors, no exploding heads. There’s not even any gore, really.

Instead it’s a look at how just, righteous people can, ever so subtly, and then not so subtly, lose their way. The fundamental point of the book is that laws don’t exist to be inconvenient, and it actually ties in with Ennis’ favorite subject: Namely, that people who think they get to decide what’s right are vastly more dangerous than criminals who know they’re monsters.

Craig Cermak’s art is solid, but he’s mostly being asked to keep it restrained; the book is very script-focused and heavy on the dialogue, but Cermak does get to play with layout in a few places. One hopes Ennis will give Cermak some room to show off later in the series. Adriano Lucas actually does a good, subtle job with the coloring, bringing out texture in Cermak’s art.

Overall, it’s a noir story with a lot of potential, from a writer we’d thought had lost the concept of restraint. If you like crime stories or hard-edged noir, check it out.

J.J. Abrams And Valve Are Working On A Game As Well As ‘Half-Life’ And ‘Portal’ Movies

J.J. Abrams and Gabe Newell delivered the keynote speech at the opening of the DICE Summit in Las Vegas yesterday. During their shared speech, they announced they’re working on a video game together which Abrams tells Polygon will explore “the limits of gaming in a perfect way.” Additionally, Valve co-founder, president, and solid dude Gabe Newell added, “We’re super excited about that and we also want to talk about making movies, either a Portal movie or a Half-Life movie.”

Abrams spoke candidly about the likelyhood of any of this happening, “It’s as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets. Which is that we are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas. And both a Portal and Half-Life movie are things I want to see.”

Newell said he and Abrams came up with their ideas after many discussions about storytelling. “We reached the point that we decided to do more than talk.” Then they totally started making out. (Not really.)

Gabe Newell has expressed apprehension in the past about making movies based on Half-Life, saying that the developer would prefer to either make it themselves or just not make it at all. Newell told PC Gamer in 2010 that after the release of Half-Life, movie directors and writers pitched the developer on their own take. “And their stories were just so bad,” Newell said. “I mean, brutally, the worst. Not understanding what made the game a good game, or what made the property an interesting thing for people to be a fan of.” [Polygon]

It looks like Newell finally found someone with a decent story. Just check out this page from a leaked Half-Life script obtained by Rock Paper Shotgun.

THAT’S SO TRUE TO THE GAME!

Big Barda Body Paint Cosplay

Big Barda

She looks like she stepped right out from the pages of a DC comic book, doesn’t she? Big Barda is cosplayed by Evina Luna.

Become a Winged, Armored Knight By Donning a Hoodie

If you could look like a knight without wearing heavy armor, why wouldn’t you? All you have to do is pull on a sweatshirt and bam, you could almost make a guest appearance in the next episode of Game of Thrones. Almost.

The hoodie is versatile, too. You can detach the hood, mask, and sleeve portions and have a pretty normal jacket (if you must). It’s made to order and takes around 3-5 weeks.

If you’d rather wear hoodie armor that’s even simpler, you can go for this option.

See more angles after the break.

Uh Oh. Is Webb Opening Door to Venom for ‘Amazing’ Films

The Amazing Spider-Man

COME-ON! haven’t we already proved that that 90s relic has no place in the Spider-Man cinematic universe?

Well make of this what you will, but amongst the photos director Marc Webb has been tweeting out this week from the set of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is this, on the surface, ambiguous pic.

amazspideylocker

It’s a locker! So what, right? How about we give it a wider context. Like this panel from the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book.

This is a scene from the Ultimate Spidey storyline that introduced Venom into the Ultimate universe. The back story there was that Peter Parker and Eddie Brock’s fathers were experimenting on a cancer cure, a black goo substance that enveloped the patient in order to treat them. The experiment, instead, was successful in creating Venom, a symbiotic life-form that has to feed on organic tissue to survive.

So there’s a tremendous similarity here, right? Is Webb trying to say that Venom is coming soon? Maybe at the end of Amazing 2 or setting up the villain for Amazing 3.

Venom has previously appeared in Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man 3 where the filmmakers stayed close to his traditional comic book origins of being an alien from outer space. Of course, a lot of people credit the awfulness of Spider-Man 3 to Venom in many ways, but the continuing, and paradoxical, popularity of the character will likely keep him in the bullpen from any Spider-Man related projects.

What do you Bastards think? Is this Twit Pic a sign of things to come?

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Update: New Production Stills Lots to See

treks

The latest Entertainment Weekly is out and features the two covers above and some new production stills from J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek Into Darkness showing a variety of the iconic Star Trek characters and situations. Let’s get right to it and find out what we can see in the stills below.

star-trek-quinto-pine

A taste of Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), not sure, but this could be from the detention scene that’s been teasing Star Trek fans everywhere for the last couple of weeks.

star-trek-pine2

Lots of action in this shot, could this be when that Starship was crashing into the bay? I don’t think anyone was able to make out whether it was the Enterprise or not in the trailers so far. I wonder though, what the hell do they use on those floors? You can see yourself in them, the future has obviously made some outstanding advancements in cleaning products.

Startek2

There he is, Benedict Cumberbatch, or John Harrison (Described by co-writer Alex Kurtzman as a ”member of Starfleet who turns on Starfleet.”) or “Khan-Lite” as we refer to him around the NerdBastards office. Check out those big guns the Red-Shirts are toting. I can’t wait to see what the Prop Replicating Cosplayers are going to do with those.

star-trek-saldana

Zo Saldana is back as the beautiful, intelligent, Linguistics expert Lt. Uhura. Spock’s main squeeze, I love this change in the Star Trek cannon. Saldana talked about her character in Star Trek into Darkness, ”I told them (writers) to make sure that Uhura kicks more ass. And she does!” I love that she is getting a greater overall role in the series, the character deserves it.

star-trek-abrams

It’s the man himself, director J.J. Abrams and writer Alex Kurtzman. What could they be talking about? Maybe something like:

Abrams: “There’s about this big a chance that I’ll take the Star Wars gig.”

OR . . .

Abrams: “This is the galaxy’s smallest violin, playing for you and whining about re-writes.”

OR . . .

Abrams: “If one more person asks me about Khan, I’m gonna pinch them so hard.”

Well, that’s all we’ve got at the moment. Did you notice something worthwhile in the pictures above? Let us know about it in the comments section below.
